I had a strange moment today where my wife and a friend of hers both referred to me as an “alpha male”. I was surprised and said that I definitely did think I was “alpha” at all, they said “no, you definitely are… but not in a bad way.” Which was odd, because I genuinely can’t think of a good way to be alpha.

I’m pretty healthy, quite assertive about things I think are important, but alpha? That feels like it belongs to Jordan Peterson, Andrew Tate and that ilk.

I don’t really mind much, sticks and stones etc, but what do you lot think and feel? Does the word alpha need to be reclaimed? Can alpha be good?

The only thing in this house who thinks of me as the Alpha is the dog! Much to my wife’s annoyance 😀. Given the choice she will always snuggle up next to me. (The dog not the wife)

In the context of software, where alpha versions are unstable, missing important features, filled with flaws, and not fit for the public?

Anytime anyone starts talking about 'Alphas' my stock response is, 'I don't really like Space Marines*'

What is an alpha male personality?
An alpha male is a man who is highly intelligent, confident, and successful. Alpha males are generally considered great leaders and prefer to be in positions of power. Common traits alpha males possess include: Being in a position of power. Being comfortable with high levels of responsibility.

Does this describe you..?

I thought Alpha males are the strong silent types who you can rely on in a crisis. Not just the stereotypical types you see in movies.

I thought alpha meant "unstable, full of flaws, and not something you'd want the general public interacting with"

Ha that's what she wants you to think.

Clearly thinks you're the one in need of comforting/protection.

The funny thing about the whole Alpha Male thing (see Andrew Tate et al) is that is based on wholly discredited research about wolves in captivity and bares **** all similarity to how actual wolves behave. And yet the stupid men's movement still use it. Because they are pricks.

Wolf packs in the wild are essentially a parental pair and their puppies

Thing is, if this story is true, and the OP didn't seize the opportunity and immediately steer his wife and her friend into a threes-up then what kind of alpha is he really?

I wouldn't see Peterson & Tate as Alpha Males - More like Sigmas.

db's description pretty much nails it, and there isn't necessarily any negative to being an alpha male (and I'm not one!!!)

We've had this with a good friend of ours, he doesn't think he is.

Was born in prison
Used to compete in horse rodeo
Climbed Matterhorn unguided
Rock climber
Does axe throwing
Comes 2nd in local lumberjack challenge....to his son
Races motorbikes
Lead singer in a band

Deffo more alpha than me
(He is genuinely a super nice guy)

If you are an alpha male then you are secure in yourself and don't need to go around shouting how alpha you are.

Pederson and Tate are not alphas.  They are inadequate boys who never grew up.

Well you learn something new everyday. That was the first time that I had heard the term "men's movement" being used, so I googled it, it turns out that there is such a thing. It's been around since the 1960s and 1970s.

And it is also apparently referred to as "the men's liberation movement".

I have no idea WTF it's about but it sounds rather tragic to me.

The whole concept as seized by popular media has been discredited. In genuine, human, terms you would be better off referring back to Rule 1.

Alpha? It's all bullshit made up to help males not comfortable with their actual self to feel OK and less threatened by everything and everyone.

I tend to feel sorry for anyone who self-proclaims as 'alpha'...

If you always feel the need to be dominant in any given situation then you need to take a good look at yourself.

I always thought “alpha male” was like the leading male in a pack / herd in the animal kingdom.

I figure an alpha male (human) would be strong (in body or mind or both) and reliable with leadership qualities. Nothing wrong with the that.

But you might still be a %*$# 😉

Therefore referring to someone as an alpha male can be either a compliment or an insult - depending on who’s saying it and the context and tone.

This describes it well and it is a very fine line between being the above and being a complete ****er with most failing and being complete ****ers.

The fact that it doesn't include caring, collaboration, helping etc,. says it all.

I have noticed the usage of the term has increased recently, with the looseness of meaning you get when that happens. It is fahion i guess. "Passive aggressive" used to be popular but that seems to have fallen off a bit.

Petersen certainly has his flaws, his extreme dieting, his views on climate change are worrying but overall I think he's a good egg who genuinely seems to care for human kind.

Andrew Hate on the other hand is a total tool, quite possibly a diagnosable psychopath, at the very least an uber narcissist, who pushes vile misogyny and disingenuous business models to beat 'The Matrix' to impressionable boys and men. I mentor traumatised kids in my job and his influence is certainly evident in some of the lads I work with.

I feel like a true Alpha is able to out perform most others in most pursuits but is able to lead and manage relationships effectively too.

Ermmm.  Not in the slightest unless you consider humankind to be white men.

He is a vile misogynist.   His views are divisive to say the least.  Its all about the grift and his constituency is inadequate white men.  He cares for one thing only.  How much money he can make from this

Gamma here. According to a online test 🙂

You are a wise and experienced person. Many suggest that an adept Alpha turns into Gamma when the time comes. You seem to be an adventurous, eager, and self-aware man who cares about his actions’ consequences. One of the loveliest things about you is that you are empathetic towards others. Unlike an Alpha male, you value people’s emotions, and you avoid hurting them.

I always just assumed it was a leader and usage has changed quite recently to describe a massive **** of a human being. Going to take a test, find out what I am!

Delta according to a test. Some of the questions were a bit shit though to be fair. It’s all psychological bollocks any way.

Delta males are somewhat resigned and slow to trust. But that is usually the result of their traumatic or sad experiences in the past. You find it difficult to solve problems through talking. And you prefer actions over words. Being lonely is your favorite way of recharging your battery. But keep in mind that Deltas can sometimes be self-sabotaging, too. So, maybe it’s time to be kinder to yourself and bring in some self-love to your life.

Peterson is a proper loon

Some start off okay, then get sucked into the manosphere bullshit and realise they make more money and have more influence that road.

Story as old as time.

Some like Tate make that a deliberate aim, capitalising on it and selling misogyny as masculinity. Which IMO makes them more detestable.

****s the lot of them, they care little for their subjects as long as the grift is working and the money keeps flowing.

See also Ant Middleton. And a bunch of American Conservative mouthpieces.

Peterson is a master of throwing out an hour-long word salad, packed full of non-sequiturs, bathed with convulted phrasing and long words - he's been described as "the stupid person's idea of an intelligent person". If actually try to follow along with his "arguments" you quickly realise they're non-sensical, which makes me at least think he's just a cynical grifter who's latched onto a part of society that feels left out and is susceptible to his charms.

It recently came to light that as Peterson became famous he essentially ignored and abandoned his case load of the patients from his private practice. He either got his wife to answer their emails querying his lack of availability, often claimed he was too sick to see them, when in fact he was out of town either filming or on TV shows, or they received an email  auto answer that asked them to write emails [in support of Peterson] to people criticising him. There are even patients who claim that he discussed their treatment with other patients.

Regardless of all the other douche-baggery that he's indulged in over the years, that alone should clear up the doubts of anyone as the sort of man he is.

I wasn't aware doctors had to go on practising forever into eternity. Or is it just until their last patient dies? Will need to stay healthy, good job they're a doctor!

To be honest, I don't know enough about JP to comment much further. I thought he was an ex university lecturer, and before that, a psychologist. Didn't know he was still treating patients. From the little I've seen of him he comes across as moderately interesting/harmless, I certainly don't see the EVILNESS. He came to my attention after that carcrash C4 interview, watched a few vids of him on Youtube/JRE before getting bored and moving on. What's he done now to upset the STW massive? Come out in support of Brexit or something?

That guy has to be running the longest deep-cover satire operation in Twitter history. He is truly all-in. The bugger has written conservative-leaning books, given speeches at Turning Point, even started a patriotic non-profit foundation to promote american values.

But according to Wiki, as a deputy mayor back in Oz as a youngster, he tried to introduce a policy to ban pigeons from his town...

He may just be spectactularly unhinged. It's fantastic.

as parent to a non-binary kid, I think he is a foul human being. A bit of reading and I'd hope you'd agree. "I don't see the evilness" doesn't stand up if you haven't looked.

I read through that Independent article and see no evidence of evilness. It seems to have cherry-picked some fragments out of a what, three hour? Joe Rogan podcast. Without watching the entire show there's no way to know what the context is.

Accepted. My threshold has been triggered previously and I am now sensitised to JP and his views. I went from the headline and first few lines - being Trans is a 'contagion' etc. but most of what is in there is attributed to Joe Rogan. Another hateful individual, IMO.

He has a history of deadnaming, misgendering, refusing to use preferred pronouns even when corrected, etc. All topics which firmly label him. I could link further articles but they would be 'reports of' because I won't watch his videos or FB and put my traffic his way.

I urge you, do some more reading. If your views resonate with his, or you don't have concerns over them, that's fine - we are all entitled to our views. Including me with mine, that he is an evil influence.

When he was just entering the main(ish) stream he did an podcast with Sam Harris which was complete word salad.
i did try listening, helped by the fact I was on a long train journey, but it was just incomprehensible waffle.
Harris kept trying to pin him down but he was basically punching mist.
They had round 2 which apparently went better but that time I had more options available and so quickly switched.
So I think he is genuine as it goes but its just his being genuine is nuts.

So equally worthless then?

at uni did some psychology courses and one of the professors dedicated some classes to the various "psychology" tests.
Allegedly it was how to recognise pseudo psychology but in reality it was a "if companies are stupid enough to use them then this is how to game them" class.

No need for a test, just read through the type descriptions and should be able to know which type you are (as long as you are self aware enough)

I am somewhere between Omega and Delta. Not sure what I am going to do with this information but for work purposes I am an Alpha, right, as that is what 99% of companies seem to think is best and promote accordingly (which is the reason they end up with a load of narcissists that the people who work for them hate but can't seen that changing any time soon)
