Having decided to learn the saxophone next year, I now require a saxophone. Having checked eBay I can get one on there for about £145 new as a beginners package.

Do any of the stw saxophonists have any advice on what makes etc to get or are all the budget ones much of a muchness? Looking at alto sax.

It'll be Yamaha.
It's always Yamaha everytime a "Which blowy noise maker?" thread appears.

Get a Yamaha.... and a Kenny G permy mullet.

You looking for new or second hand? There are some hooky insturments out in the world, if you buy new with a warrenty and guarantee you may be better off.

This. Except for the mullet... although I love the image!

Yamaha pretty much always guarantees a level of quality you would be lucky to find in other beginner instruments.

And be prepared for a sore jaw for the first few weeks. Getting the embouchure right ain't easy. But get through it, and one day, you might play like Stan Getz.

As a total beginner the quality of the instrument isn't actually all that important. In fact I'd go as far as to say that that holds even for much better players.

A much better place to spend your cash would be on a good mouthpiece and save a lot for your reeds. You're going to be spending a lot of money on reeds.

Edit: for the record I do actually rate Yamaha instrument and my sax is a YAS 62, albeit one that I bought second hand but from someone that I knew.

I think music shops will often hire instruments like a sax for a six month or year period. I think it's probably quite a good way to try an instrument before splashing out, and you should get an instrument which is half-decent.
