My ongoing tidying of the garage has unearthed a Woodforde's Bure Gold kit which is someway past its best before date. I have time on my hands and need beer - is it worth a try or will i have wasted 40 pints of water and end up bitterly disappointed.
thanks
If it was mine I would give it a go.
Just give it a go.
Get some fresh yeast, the rest of the kit it will be fine.
I'd second getting some more yeast.
Assuming the malt extract is liquid (big tin), it'll probably last quite well I imagine, so fresh yeast and give it a whirl!
Yep, just acquire some yeast and give it a go. If you have a local brewery see if you can get a tablespoon and a few grams of frezh hops
Chuck the hops in 5 mins before and 5 mons after eob
Otherwise its a 5gm sachet from a home brew shop and some sterisan
Chuck the hops in 5 mins before and 5 mons after eob
The Woodfordes kits are not boil brews. Just open the tins, pour into a “sterilised” brew bucket, add two tins of boiling water, top up to 23liters. Add yeast when about 20degC.
Fresh yeast would be not a bad shout. Dry hop a couple of days before barrelling or bottling. Just don’t go mad.
thanks guys can I use the dried yeast i have ordered for baking?
Where can i get the hops during lock down?
While baking yeast will probably work, it might give some odd flavours.
I’d try get hold of some beer yeast - ideally one for the style of beer you like.

They used to have a better selection than that. I tend to use S04 for ales & US05 for American style, but they’re out of stock of both 🙁 Nottingham (not listed) for dark ales/stout/porter
Looking at those I’d go for the Librty Bell Ale yeast for ‘generic’ ales and the US West Coast yeast for, er, US West Coast style ales such as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
They do hops as well.
You could decant a saucepan worth of the diluted wort, bring it up to the boil then add 5-10g of your favourite hops to that; boil for 5mins then strain back into the bulk wort. Use a metal sieve that you’ve already sterilised.
add the yeast when the combined wort drops to 20degC
Lots of online places to get proper yeast, but be aware that they are struggling to keep up with demand at the moment, so lots of delays.
Try the baking yeast please. I really want to find out what happens.
Thanks for the advice. Sorry Willard beer yeast and hops ordered. I will report back in 4 weeks with the results.

You can and you will get alcohol. However don't expect it to taste very good.

I once tried some bread yeast with home grown grapes - I got something vaguely alcoholic that tasted like liquid bread.
I bought brewers yeast (and added lots of sugar) next time.
bitterly disappointed
Stealth pun ??
Because trying to get fresh brewing yeast might just make you put everything back hidden away in the garage, I'd probably just use the yeast it's got in it and see how it goes. Just be super careful about cleanliness as the yeast might be bit less virile so will take longer to get established and might be more likely to not manage to totally overwhelm other microbes.
Well 2 months on and i have a beer - it looks ok but it tastes terrible. Very vinegary like it has been pumped through dirty pipes! I would definitely send it back. Oh well nothing ventured. Have a great weekend and thanks for the advice on the experiment.
Market it as a miracle weight loss treatment. The punters won't be disappointed. Inside out hollow shells perhaps, but not disappointed.

Sounds like one of those new fangled sour varieties.
