Are you sure the tones aren't just turned off? It's buried somewhere in the settings, under 'setup' or similar.

I had a similar problem with mine.

Bought a new one and the problems disappeared.

Just got a replacement edge from Garmin for £68 after my reset/lap button stopped working, fairly quick and painless process involving a telephone call and posting the broken one to them.

Weirdly I can't turn mine off after a firmware update on my 500 (and yeah it's off in the settings).

I dunno about the edges, but some of the forerunners had holes in front of the speaker to let sound out.
And corrosive sweat in..
My garmin 205 lost it's beep that way.

if all that went wrong with my Edges was the beeper, I'd be happy!

1st one had the screen pop while snowboarding - no impact, just a sudden change in pressure affects them apparently

2nd on refused to do anything other than display the splash screen

3rd one one of the buttons died

So I'm on my 4th unit in 3 years!

Cheers, Rich

I had the bottom two buttons stop working because there was so much crud under them. I used my mouth to squirt water through the gaps where they were seated and blew it all out - worked fine. Until it fell off the crappy clamp and got run over by a car, that is. Garmin did me a refurb for cheap though which was nice.
