Every day I wake up and think my life would be significantly improved by having a coffee waiting for me beside me in bed. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to be not instant coffee. It would need to be small to fit beside my bed. And cheap because this is definitely a life luxury. And not just a kettle and aeropress because that requires a level of capability that I’m hoping the bedside coffee will achieve.

Any recommendations?

MrsMC is only 4'10 and finally mastered the aeropress - that meets a couple of the criteria?

And you would be right.
mrs_oab is woken with a freshly served cuppa every morning. Apparently it's wonderful.
I'm not small enough to fit on a bedside table. 😁

TBH is there anything as ‘70s as a teasmaid,

I yearned for a Goblin 860 Teasmaid as a kid the slick ‘80s version, 🙂

I think I’d rather spend the money and have a nice bean2cup in the kitchen and have the joy of a fresh brew all day.

Mrs D_J has the luxury version that offers a choice of oat milk latte, tea with milk, or camomile tea, all served with rye sourdough toast.

Sounds like Mr Hannah needs to up his game 😀

Thing is I can't see how it can work well anyway.  You don't like instant and, to my mind anyway, that also rules out pre-ground coffee as it goes stale overnight, so you're going to need someway of grinding the coffee beans next to your bed - cue noise, faff and probably having to actually get out of bed rather than just sit up.  Well, unless you have a bean2cup next to the bed of course but how big is your bedside table?!

I like your style. I've often pondered this over the years. But the milk problem always stumps me. Like you say, it needs to be ready, preferably activated by an alarm. No faffing with getting milk out of a fridge etc.

An important thread.

That

Barisieur Tea & Coffee Alarm Clock

Even has a fridge for the milk, but they don’t say how it gets there 🙂

Aww. You lot are just too cute.

Perhaps I need to apply for a visa for Mr Hannah on the grounds that he’s an essential worker? He is good at making coffee when he’s here, but I feel the need to reciprocate and bring him coffee too.

@bigginge have you used one of those? I saw them but wondered how much cleaning out was involved between cups. If you can make a few before you have to empty hoppers and such it might be a goer. Also wonder if you can use it with a normal mug without making a mess?

@sillysilly perhaps you could help out @tootight if that’s your idea of cheap!

@reeksy I think the coffee will spur me on to getting out of bed, unless I go for @kayak23’s solution.

Jura do a reasonably compact expresso bean2cup maker, but probably fails on the cost side.

@chaos I am not sensitive enough to notice Lidl ground coffee going stale overnight.

@jambourgie thank you recognising the importance of this issue. I think I have the milk problem solved by a) having a cold bedroom and b) using soya or almond milk, which seems a little less prone to turning. And an alarm activated option would be great, but I realise some personal sacrifice may be needed so I’m prepared to find the will to lean over and press a button after my phone alarm wakes me up, if needed.

One solution I sketched out is the automated Uber-Eats/Deliveroo order. It wouldn't be to your actual bed of course but during the pandemic one could have items left on the doorstep. I think you'd need a developer on board to build a basic app that would place an order at say Costa Coffee at a pre-determined time. You could also rearrange your living arrangements so your bed is next to your front door... got to think outside the box.

got to think outside the box.

Surely this requires the 6-month development of some sort of Arduino-based C3PO robot that can grind (by hand, of course), tamp, and bring you a perfect Americano? Or at the very least, some sort of Wallace-and-Gromit-inspired contraption that pours boiling water inches away from your sleeping face.

P.S. The answer to the milk problem is not to drink (inferior) milky coffee. At first it starts out as laziness but then turns into snobbishness when you realise the cow juice just taints the coffee.

Keep an eye on De’Longhi’s eBay outlet.

Particularly when eBay do one of their 20% off deals.

We got a very nice “refurbished” bean-to-cup with about 60% off the best prices we saw in the shops.

It still had the blue plastic film on all the stainless parts.

Don’t lie there daydreaming, get up and make a coffee! Just think of all the hassle keeping this ‘dream’ device clean and stocked with beans etc and you know you should get off your lazy arse and go to the kitchen instead.

Or get a gullible partner/servant/slave to go make it for you

If you're happy with with filter then there are loads.

If you want milk there are tiny fridges available - this one for example is thermoelectric so won't make any noise:

I've stayed in hotels where they have a Nespresso machine and little UHT milk sachets within reach of the bed.

I'm pretty sure my grandad has a Teasmaid but it was a long time ago an I was very small.

Nespresso, just lean over hit the button and you're done. Or a filter coffee machine on a timer switch.

My mother had a teasmade and used instant coffee for many years. A coffee bag would work just fine but the coffee might be weak. Or a willing servant. I have a teasmade and it's a fine device. Had it for years. Laugh all you want, but morning tea in bed is lovely.

Filter coffee machine and a time switch worked for me in my Uni days. Except I put it on the other side of the room so I had to get out of bed to get the coffee…

The only snag was that I had to set it up the night before, but I could usually cope with that.

Beat me to it.

Is it the best coffee in the world? No. Is it infinitely better than instant? Hell yes.

I have a Nespresso machine which I, erm, liberated during an office move. I'd never have bought one in a million years, but having had every coffee machine from large filter machines to Aeropress to stovetop Mocca pots, I've probably had more use out of the pod machine than all the others combined. Small footprint, press one button and off it goes. (Tassimo has far more choice than Nespresso but I don't think does long drinks?)

that also rules out pre-ground coffee as it goes stale overnight,

Oh behave, no it doesn't.

Anyway, a little kettle, a timer plug (if you're really that lazy that you can't just hit a switch 😉 ), and a cafetiere.

Surely put the coffee bag in the mug and just let hot water dribble onto it, then you can leave it in as long as you want?

He is good at making coffee when he’s here

Well, if MrHannah is going to let a simple thing like "being on different continent" get in the way of making his lady happy by making her a cup of coffee in the morning, then don't you have to ask yourself whether he's really the man for you?

Right, that makes sense. An ex had one and used to moan at me for using about six pods for each drink. Doesn't everyone drink coffee by the pint?

Genuine question - why are you so dependent on coffee that you need it the minute you wake up?

Not enough sleep, too much alcohol, too much exercise ?

Cheaper than cocaine. Not as harmful as cigarettes. It tastes nice and wakes you up. Oh, and it's mildly addictive.

Right, that makes sense. An ex had one and used to moan at me for using about six pods for each drink.

The Tassimo pods have a barcode on them which tells the machine how long to run water for. The XXL pods are a mugful but there's only a choice of like two varieties (L'Or, which is actually pretty decent, and Morning Coffee whatever that is. Oh, I think there's a Kenco one as well?). With the shorter serves you can press and hold the dispense button to override it and add more water, but as you suggest I reckon you'd need a couple of espresso-length pods for a normal mug. And really, the whole point is "snap the lid shut, press the button, drink" so as soon as you start adding faff you might as well be using a regular coffee machine.

A mate has a Nespresso and swears by it. He once offered me a brew, I said sure and he came over with what was essentially a display case of multi-coloured pods like a chocolate selection box. There's a part of me that thinks that's pretty neat, but I just don't drink espresso.

Buying cold I'd probably pick the Nespresso over the Tassimo (recommend what you don't have!) but only if there were some means of telling it to make longer drinks.

Random thought.

Can you get a heated flask. Make it before bed still red hot in the morning

12v flask

Not quite this but same idea?

Oh aye, I forgot. There's a few latte style Nespresso options which make a full mug using two pods, a coffee pod and a milky milky one. They do a "caramel latte" which is amazing (but probably of little use to Hannah if she's avoiding dairy).

Just this morning I heard a Michael Moseley thing on R4 that said coffee first thing was bad for your blood sugar management.
Obviously this means certain death, so his advice is to get up, eat breakfast, then have a coffee. But I'd recommend you expand your bedside table to allow preparation of a full English without having to get up.

This is how i make the tassimo version.

1 flavoured latte milk, 1 creamer milk, 1, sometimes 2 coffee pods. 2 cubes of demerara ,and a small(literally a couple of teaspoons worth) splash of rum for flavour purposes.

Makes it quite milky on a single coffee pod, so its nice late in the evening. 2 coffee pods preferred in the morning.

What's the difference? Literally milk and cream?

I note mention of Mr Hannah and associated logistical difficulties however, if I'm not mistaken you have children. If they can't be used for this what can you use them for? I know mining and clothing manufacturing is generally frowned upon these days but surely a morning cup of coffee, delivered with a lightly toasted crumpet* as they read the papers to you in their best 40s BBC voice is still deemed a reasonable demand of your offspring?

Failing that one of those filter thingies with a timer works well, or a nespresso with a refillable pod - you're going to have to prep it the night before so you you don't run out of water, so may as well ditch the convenience and environmental impact of premade pods.

*or a muffin - as well as children you've got that weird thing about stuff with holes in that denies you the rapture of crumpets I think.

(edit) I have been known when on an early start to setup my espresso machine the night before, put it on an old fashioned plug top multi segment timer and left it "switched on" with the timer set for ten minutes before my alarm. By the time I'm get up its heated and all I need to do is stumble to the machine and flick the switch for the pump.

Make fresh coffee the night before then empty into flask then place on bedside table.

The advantage of this is you'll be happy with instant by the end of week one.

Quantity.

The latte aspect of it is about 1/2 a tall mug, the creamer seems to be about the same amount as an espresso. So if i use a single latte and espresso capsules i get about 3/4 of my tall mug, the creamer pod fills it nearly to the top. Just a way really of adding more quantity to the drink..

Oh god, no they're not. I mean, I have a sweet tooth but urgh they are syrupy goo. The milk is so fake, I'd rather have black coffee and I don't even like black coffee.

I drink ground coffee, instant coffee and....... Nespresso. Nespresso is fine to my taste buds. Get a Vertuo Plus and it does the barcode thing for the right amount of water

Cheaper than cocaine. Not as harmful as cigarettes

Yeah, but a line, a coffee and a fag though - breakfast of the gods.....

The milk is so fake

It appears to be condensed milk. The hot water blowing through it turns it back into a thinner milk type thing.

This is the only sensible suggestion of the thread so far. A drip/pour over coffee machine is what you want - I'm sure some of them come with an auto on function, and if not, you can just use a smart plug.

The sage one is supposed to be excellent, and a quick google indicates that you can get it for less than 200 notes

It's not, it's even less sensible than the cocaine.

It's a £30 Russell hobs or similar, many of which have a timer, with a £160+ sage badge on it. Heck the breville (who are sage if you're not in the UK) machines are <£50.

Breville and Sage aren't the same thing, in the UK Breville are a completely different company. Sage do use the name Breville internationally but that's a different company to the UK Breville.

I'll not argue the point here, the reality so far as this thread is concerned though is the sage machine is massively expensive for a machine with all the required functionality available at <25% of the cost so long as its not important for it to be in silver plastic with a sage badge.

I would still love a Moccamaster on a timer plug for the mornings if our kitchen had the space.

As coffee-snobby as James Hoffmann is, he still grinds the beans for his filter coffee the night before, which means you could likely get away with it at home…

https://flic.kr/p/2nnKMTY

Edit: You can get a Melitta Aromaboy for not a lot, that is likely closer to what the OP wanted at ~£30 plus a timer plug

Or you could get all fancy and use a WiFi plug, then when you know you're 30min from getting home from a mucky cold wet ride you can fire it up and get home to fresh coffee. (Yeah, you do need to remember to set it up beforehand, but still...)

I manage to stumble downstairs where my Sage Oracle waits for me pre-warmed.

However, when on holiday* I often take one of these with me:
https://www.nespresso.com/uk/en/essenza-mini-coffee-machine

I do love having it by my bedside. Only of use if you love espresso really, but if you don’t love espresso you should learn.

* a house-style holiday of course. When I’m cycling I take one of these:

@stwhannah I’m afraid I’ve no direct experience with those; we ended up with the very STW solution of a sage bambino down in the kitchen. Our the little ones are still young enough that we don’t really have the option of staying in bed in the morning, so the trek to the kitchen is pretty much inevitable even if it isn’t for coffee.
