The waves are only 'awesome' or 'admirable' around here...

I'm 40 miles from the sea, but the duckpond had a 6 foot swell when the wind blew past earlier. And some of the puddles on the ranges last night were big enough to need tide tables.
Many, many Februaries ago I did fishery protection in the north sea in "phenomenal" sea states. Very impressive and I enjoyed it a lot, especially as I was one of very few officers not suffering with sea-sickness which was nice as, being a reservist, I'd got a lot of ribbing out possible sea-sickness before we headed out to sea.
We headed back in after a few days when we realised there were no fishing boats at sea!
Wow - does that happen often?
Is it like in Space Balls ,will the winds go straight to ludicrous speed?
🙂

46ft is *quite* impressive for a wave, I suppose.

Strong waves then ?
Is that "14+" the average height? 😯
that black bit looks like a mouth..

Am I the only one who starts humming this when I see the world 'phenomenal'?
Thought so. 🙂

No, but curse your quick fingers for posting that before me!

Trust me, it looks pretty impressive from the bridge of a relatively small ship (I was on an Island Class which is about 60m long).
well these houses look strong enough, what could go wrong?
As long as they have all the heavy furniture (and gold bars) at the right end,it'll be reet.

I get that when i see this fellow on the TV. Which is quite a bit as he co-hosts the football on BT Sport
Re that wave height chart as a face. I see something different. With ireland as a massive, sexually engorged ****
Where's smurfmatt when you need him, he was Phenomenal all the time IIRC....
I can't see the problem, i used to run my model trains over stuff like that all the time !
I hope there isn't a car in that garage. Could be there for a while!
Surfs up dude *SPOILER ALERT*
I'd forgotten just how bad that film was, or at least the acting....
It was awesome in 1991 😉

it's something called the Significant Wave Height. as a rule of thumb it's the mean wave height (peak to trough) of the highest 1/3rd of the waves.

RIP Swayze.

Or, if there is another couple of feet of erosion, a fairly short time.........
At least with the wind in that direction it won't be too chilly. 😀
I might stick STRAVAAAA! on for the ride home, 20-40mph tail winds.
'cept the roads will be jammed cos of Bob.
Damn you, Bob!
Does anyone else wonder if it is time to quit the UK before it gets washed away forever?

*Awaits majority of the population of Glasgow to flock into the sea in some kind of lemming rush*
Particularly when they hear the coast is being battered -they'll be down there with deep fat fryers before you can say mars bar. 😉

Just seen the news. There was a small vehicle of some kind in it (mower or golf cart or something) but it wasn't there for long - fell out of the bottom of the garage on the next tide along with the rest of their stuff!

Cheers, knew I'd read something about that before. From your link, and the red blobs (>10m waves) on the map posted by wwaswas above:

1 in 10 will be larger than 10.7 metres (35 ft)
1 in 100 will be larger than 15.1 metres (50 ft)
1 in 1000 will be larger than 18.6 metres (61 ft)

😯
For anyone who knows Portland...
