He comes across as a decent bloke. Any other views on a stranger?

Hardly a stranger!
Anyway as a cyclist/motorcyclist I despise anyone using their phone while driving. Perhaps you should to?

He speeds and uses a mobile in built up area's.
When caught he uses expensive lawyers to try and get off.

He's not a decent bloke - He's an a*hole.

What a dick.

David Beckham banned from driving for using mobile phone https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48213106

Also, six point doesn’t get you a ban. So he’s failing to take driving seriously even after having been caught before.

And that’s on top of the 59 in a 40 he got lawyer-ed out of facing.

Maybe this will stop him behaving like a **** while in command of an enormous and heavy machine.

BTW, 59 in a 40 pretty much doubles your stopping distance. If something happens that needs it, an emergency stop that *might just* have made it becomes a collision at 40mph instead. 59 in a 40 is as serious as simply not breaking at all.

Also, most folk drive pretty near to or under the limit. Really, they do. So most folk when judging crossing the road or pulling out at junctions expect that speed and base their behaviour on that.

That’s why guys who are making progress are also always the ones complaining about folk pulling out.

And as said above using an iPhone in a Bentley hand held when (I assume) BT would do it legally just typifies the lack of thought. Maybe he’ll think twice at Christmas time when he’s driving again.

I don’t care if he’s a stranger: all that’s true for all people.

not quite - The police have to follow the law to in order to get a conviction and they didn't here. His lawyer did exactly what they are supposed to do. I don't condone the speeding but I see no issue with the outcome.

Beckham's defence barrister Gerrard Tyrrell said the former Manchester United midfielder had "no recollection of the day in question or this particular incident".

His barrister's a bit shit. Not only is that not even an attempt at a defence, but it implies that fiddling with his mobile while driving wasn't an unusual event.

He comes across as a decent bloke

Does he?

Yep. I still think there’s a lot worse out there.

Got caught, pleaded guilty, got sentenced. Sounds like lots of people who start threads on here. And not long back someone was advising another member to contest due to delay. Bunch of hypocrits. 😉

This did bother me:

A court heard he was photographed by a member of the public holding a phone as he drove in "slowly moving" traffic.

All a bit Stasi, Vichy France etc. Would they have done that with ordinary Joe? I doubt it given the number of Youtubes of people behaving badly that never result in prosecution.

Good bloke indeed in my book. Usual haters will hate. He is a dick for using his phone whilst driving though.

Its a proper Krispy Creme Doughnut week this isn't it..🤪

I'm 2/3rds through my second layer and about to puke and this topic comes up..

I will seriously have to re-think my strategy for watching what folks type in reply to these topics..

As is, he's a dick for driving whilst on his phone, simple. He broke the Law that is supposed to be equitable and fair to all other road users...

Mebbies Posh Spice will have to drop him off at his mates for a little while.

A man who was charged with use of a mobile device whilst in control of a vehicle was dealt with appropriately by the courts. And in other news...

How many of you would nor seek recourse to the loophole of date of issue, had it been issued out of time - see other thread...

It wouldn't be an attempt at a defence, his client had already pleaded guilty. His job is to present his clients position - he's not supposed to mislead the court. There was unlikely to be much that could be said to get a better outcome.

Bunch of hypocrits.

Surely only hypocritical if everyone agreed with both points?

All a bit Stasi, Vichy France etc. Would they have done that with ordinary Joe? I doubt it given the number of Youtubes of people behaving badly that never result in prosecution.

Would the M.O.P. have reported it? Maybe not - thats what happens if you are a celebrity "role model" and drive a high profile vehicle. I'm sure some report every driver they see though. Some police forces have sites specifically for the purpose. Would the Police have acted on it? if the evidence was good enough quality I don't see why not - Traffic Police really don't like people using phones. I'm not sure if the prosecution policy is either officially or unofficially linked to previous driving record.

I have no idea why anyone who could afford to have a driver would ever choose to drive themselves. Driving is a chore and he's obviously got a lot more on his mind (hence using the phone) so why not pay someone else to do it for you? Honestly, if I were wealthy I'd never be in the driving seat.

His barrister can only advance the defence he's been instructed to present, and can't present a case which he knows not to be true.

Prob a case of poor reporting of a plea in mitigation.

Having a chauffeur is seen as a bit gauche. Something Alan Sugar would do...

Who cares what the plebs think I’d definitely get a chauffeur and insist he had a nice hat.

I would never have a chauffeur, I love driving. Plus it wouldn't go down well when putting across any socialist points.

Go by bus then. Buy an expensive car, pay the running costs, then pay someone else to drive it. That’s just bloody daft! If you have his sort of money, driving isn’t a chore, because he’s not having to do it to get to work like all the rest of us do; that’s a chore. If I could afford a Bentley Continental GT, I’m buggered if I’ll let someone else enjoy driving it!
