Sure STW will have some recommendations? Simple but decent...

I've got a cheapy Wahl one (about a tenner from Tesco) that is fine when it works but won't hold a charge and now constantly feels like it's struggling. I've got a reasonably expensive Phillips one which is supposed to collect the trimmings and it's rubbish - stupid design of the guard seems to stop it actually picking up and trimming hair.

So I'm looking for something that is rechargeable, will last and actually trims a beard. Don't need 37 different attachments and loads of bells and whistles...

I got a waterproof Wahl trimmer primarily for battery life and it has been ridiculously good, I shave once a week and it's lasted about 8 months and still going strong on one charge. It was 60 quid reduced from 80 I think. Only downside is it doesn't have a small enough step between guard off and smallest guard, but meh. I have never used it in the shower, just over the sink. Basically it is great, no gimmicky bells. Just trims and feels powerful. A bit pricey but seems good value

Get yourself one that plugs into a socket, yes you might need an extension lead but you'll never need to worry about a battery. Personally, I'd recommend Wahl.

I've got one of these...

...battery just goes on and on! Only gets used once a fortnight or so though.

I've got one of these, battery last ages, does the job well.
Wireless is key IMO, means I can trim my beard in the garden and not have to worry about cleaning up the trimmings.

Mains powered Wahl hair clippers used for beard trimming duties here. Never struggles for power on the thicker bits and I don't run the risk of running out of charge just as you get it down to the comedy sideburns and inappropriate moustache moment. If I'm feeling fancy then I use a Philips Oneblade to tidy up under the neck and other areas that may require a more delicate approach to trimming.

I’m looking for something that will give stubble, something between a 0 and a 1 on my whal?, preferably waterproof.

I'd one a bit back had a vacuum on it and that worked pretty ok. Not the % they claimed but compared to what I use currently, a vast improvement.

My Wahl is waterproof but the 0 to 1 jump seems a bit too big. Doesn't bother me but 0 is quite close, 1 basically close beard kind of needs a 1/2

The op may dislike Philips, but these are all the rage.

The 1mm setting gives me a pretty respectable goatee.

The problem with Phillips One is the cost of replacement "blades". Seriously, the cost of two replacement blades is only marginally less than buying a brand new unit with two blades includes. Crazy but I guess that's a deliberate plot by Phillips.

Anyway, I've been using a Phillips One for a couple of years and it's no more than 'ok' but I've got VERY bristley, rough, thick hair so YMMV

Yeah, that's the one I've got. The guard tends to flatten longer beard and not pick it up to trim it like the basic open fingery guards do.

Might need to sell a kidney and invest in the fancy Wahl one then!

I’ve had a few over the years. A Phillips vacuum one was bulky and had a door that broke almost immediately so had tape on for most of its life. And it didn’t fit that well. And you still had to clear up afterwards

Have had this for a couple of years and it’s really good. Self sharpening blade  good solid guides  stays charged for ages.  And it’s nearly half price
