which part of tuscany are you going to? and when?

august is when the italians 'shut up shop' and head to the beaches themselves, so theyre pretty busy, and a lot of shops are closed in the towns because of this.

we love uncrowded sandy beaches but werent impressed with the italian beach culture of 'bagno's' where there a lot of 'beach clubs' that you pay for to use their services, and have row upon row of sunbeds. just wasnt our cup of tea so we only had one beach day, the rest was visiting the lovely villages and towns, wine-tasting, tower of pisa, lucca etc, theres plenty to do.

but.....going back to your original question, if its just beaches youre after then others will be better informed than me, we didnt investigate much further than that one day. we enjoyed it tho, and im sure that there are plenty of lovely uncrowded beaches, but we didnt find them 🙂

Maremma.... Alberese. Basically because it's one of the hardest to get to.

Everything else is going to be crowded in summer.

As above, Italian beaches are usually divided up into bagnos and then free for all sections.

If you want to spend the day and can find a nice bagno with good facilities they're actually quite good once you get used to concept. They're not expensive but you can park on site (in the shade usually), get snacks/drinks easily and have changing facilities etc. They've also quite often have shaded areas with stuff for the kids to play with.

We tend to go to Viareggio, if you head slightly north it's a bit nicer/quieter around Forte dei Marmi/Cinquale. Wouldn't want to spend a holiday there but nice enough for a day out, worth a potter around Viareggio to see the yachts being built etc.

Cheers for the advice. We went to southern campania a few years ago and the beach club things were a bit odd. Found a few that were free that were nice....but not many!
we are staying near Volterra in an agriturismo for a week. near to river beaches so that will probably be good for cooling off. Was thinking about Elba, but it sound like it will be very crowded. Anyone been?

We had a day at Viareggio but being used to Mallorca beaches I wouldn't rush back, the water was warm
Elba stayed there a few days but the beach we had beside us was busy but no sand just pebbles everywhere and paddle 10' out then instantly deep water so you wanted to be a very confident swimmer, the locals seemed to like it

If you're staying in Volterra, this place isn't far away. Nothing there for miles around other than a car park.

Safe to swim. You can go explore (swim and climb over rocks) a long way into the gorge.

Take supplies with you. You can/could camp out

I was taken to Parco Regionale Migliarino

It was quiet. Until we arrived.
(This was for 'work' on Erasmus programme.)
