A local BBC reporter has pulled up a thread I started on here a couple of months ago, and emailed me to see if he an use me as a case study for a report he is doing today.

I phoned him back (was genuine) and declined.

The power of Google!

A few months ago an IT bloke who specialises in security was on BBC R4 talking about how personal data might be mis-used in the future. At the end of the feature the BBC asked him what advice he would give to anybody thinking of putting personal information on the web though Farcebook or any other social media.

His advice? "Don't. Just don't."

Dezb got there first.

Though I personally believe that the return of the arctic roll is of national importance.

On this basis, I'd like to confess about the time I slept with a singer whose name rhymes with Clever Mole and used to be in a band whose name sounds like "On a Cloud".

If there are any BBC reporters lurking around, please respect my privacy. i will be devastated if this ever gets out and I'm thereafter known as the guy who slept with you-know-who 🙁

emailed me to see if he an use me as a case study for a report he is doing today.

Sounds like it will be a great report. "A man on an internet forum about bicycles says...." 🙂

Was it a story on middle aged male fantasies, ultimate keyboardwarriorism, advanced pedantry, or famous stories I have copy'n'pasted ?

Researcher must be quite the easy job these days.

Boss: I need information on GP waiting times.

Researcher: *googles 'I need information on GP waiting times'*

Surprised it wasn't your thread on the media that started with

Am I missing something at the moment with the sensationalist over reporting of non stories, or am I just becoming a grumpy old man?

Should have let him interview you, but made sure you talked about nothing but arctic roll.

Jamie - you got it. God knows what we did before Google. I remember ringing up parish council chairmen a lot, though.

Surfmat once lost a job by slagging off his employer on the SSB, they looked at his internet use from the Office and out the door he went 😳

His advice? "Don't. Just don't."

In an interview about urban exploration, I had a journalist ask me about getting naked in a power station.

I had to explain that it wasn't just power stations, it was also up cranes, in hospitals, down a gold mine once,...

He decided that was too weird to put in the article 😉

I can see "Industrial Heritage Streaking" being a difficult sell to an editor.

I got a random email from the bbc once because of some posts I'd made on a motorbike forum, ended up getting paid to ride up and down the duke's pass all day, and had a nice chat with Richard Wilson. Ended up not making the final show as they decided they wanted old bikers for the piece, but it was a grand day out.

So if anyone is reading this and would like to offer me money to do things I do anyway, call me!

I'm fairly sure journalists will take what you say with a pinch of salt, Woppit.

Yes, do be careful what you post on here.

I'll be careful in case I'm still being stalked 😉 but some flippant comment I made about an ex (may have called her "crazy"), was read by someone on here who then showed it to my ex.

Still haven't figured out how my cryptic pseudonym failed me.

Also other organisations, including political parties, are increasingly focusing on social media. I noticed someone on here who only appears on controversial issues, very articulate with 'supporting evidence', pushing a particular political position, who seems never to have shown any interest in bikes or mtb and is a recent member. That irritates me slightly, kind of underhand.

also, the lawyers for Brooks, Coulson etc had teams of people scanning the internet for comments that might be construed as contempt during the trial that they, each morning, presented to the judge as evidence that a fair trial was impossible.

Although most were from twitter some were described as coming from 'obscure corners of the internet' which I guess this place would count as to most people.

The Singletrack Forum does seem to have pretty potent Google juice, as I've found random searches (how to use a matchstick to tighten a loose screw for instance) return threads off here.

badnewz - that's because google knows you read singletrack a lot and is merely sending you relevant search results 😛

google knows you read singletrack a lot

And that's a failure: I want it to look in places that I don't know about if I do a search.

I want it to look in places that I don't know about if I do a search.

you can tell google to ignore your browsing history.

or just use a different browser for search, I have a copy of Chrome I use just for 'anonymous' searches.

Exactly. I found a box you could tick somewhere in google's settings where you can turn off its attempts to shape search and adsense result based on who it thinks you are - not your specific browse or search history but a more general age/gender/interest guess it has made about you. So regardless of my browsing history it serves results based on the assumption that I'm a 40 something male interested in outdoor sports. Sometimes my searches do relate to my own interests but stuff do for work, particularly background research I do for film and TV, its not my own interests I want reflected back at me. So I turned if off.

The only tangible results i noticed having done that was these ads ^ > were suddenly all for incontinence pants.

If you're using Chrome, install the Personal Blocklist (by Google) extension. Allows you to remove sites from turning up in searches. Easy to block/unblock.
