Not a big rant, I just can't get that emotional about it, but why is Bill Turnble, a respected BBC news reader, narrating songs of praise like it was the given truth on a supposed unbiased station like BBC1 at prime time on a Sunday?
As I said, not that bothered as I can make my own mind up, but surely he was the wrong man for the job?

What do you think?

"Bill, d'you want Songs of Praise?, £25K for a bit of narration?"

"Oh, go on then."

well it is a programme for those who like god- not seen it for decades - is it still basically a service in a church?
What do you expect Dawkins like tutting and disdain?

You may as well moan that football commentators appear to like football and dont call it wendyball, top gear presenters appear to like cars etc
Its not the news and unbiased means something for everyone in the entertainment stakes including the religious who . I assume, watch this.

Now if they start putting a slot in the middle of the news then I will get cross #stopthoughtfortheday

It's not known as the 'God slot' for nothing, you know. They've been showing it for decades, or had it just slipped your notice?
And as for unbiased, this is, supposedly, a nominally Christian country, and SoP is about the only recognition of that fact on national TV.
Whether you like it or not Christians have as much right to some recognition of their faith as anybody else.
And before you start flaming me, I'm not a Christian, I'm a Pantheistic Humanist, I don't care one way or another what others believe in, I just ignore any faith-based radio or TV programming.
As I suggest you do, you'll find life a lot less stressful that way.

Hmm, as I said I can make my own decisions, I was simple questioning the use of a newsreader to preach.

Ho hum.

Just because he's a newsreader, is he not entitled to his belief, and indeed to share it on a religious program?

Like said before - if he was proposing his belief on the news instead, that'd be a different matter. But it's not the news, it's a specialist program.

Stop calling him a newsreader! He's a presenter. They don't even call it 'Breakfast News' anymore because they don't do any news.

They should have got Susanna Reid to present it in a naughty nuns outfit, that would be a religious experience.

Some interesting responses, I shall have a ponder & refrain from exposing my thoughts to the STW massive in future as you are all clearly cleverer than me.

Cheers.

In fairness, reading the news is just reading an auto cue. Maybe he doesn't believe the news/ agree with what he's saying and he just does it for the money. Maybe he's a Christian and sop is his true passion, and for anyone who believes, it is the truth and it is very hard to argue with faith!

Don't be so hard on yourself.

Although I am genuinely interested in why you haven't figured out that there is no logical reason for you to sit and watch Songs of Praise.

.

And also to ask :

"surely he was the wrong man for the job?

What do you think?"

makes no sense if you're not interested in people's opinions.

Oh come on, the question I put out was obviously something that I had thought about & I was concerned enough about it to warrant a post.
So Yes I thought it was wrong to use a 'presenter' that is also used to present 'shit' but then I'm no keyboard worrier that can keep up with STW.
I simply thought it would provoke a decent debate, I was clearly wrong.

Cheers.

I'm going to be unashamedly unPC now and mention that I caught about 5 minutes of the programme last week when there was a group of absolutely gorgeous young ladies singing in an Irish choral group. Stunning. Didn't notice who the presenter was though, sorry 😉

Ernie, no it wasn't. I'm not religious but I do feel that religion is something that should be respected.
BTW, I was watching as I was to lazy to change channel after the GP as I moved over to the computer.

My Mum watched it and sang along when I was growing up. I assume she still does. If so, I suspect that she's probably the youngest (in her 60s), and quite possibly the only, viewer.

That's nothing. How can the BBC get away with spending a BILLION pounds on their new news building. It is an extension FFS! I can't believe nobody has made more of a fuss about this. A billion pounds!!!????

You don't seem to have much respect for someone who wishes to be seen on a religious programme, irrespective of what he does as a day job.
I'm not a channel-hopper, unlike my dad, who used to drive my mum nuts, but I'm not so damned lazy not to switch channels if there's something on TV I'm not in the slightest bit interested in watching.
It's not difficult to do, you just press a couple of buttons.
But then you'd have nothing to rant about on STW...

CountZero, I have no idea why you should be so angry about it, but it is as simple as I didn't bother to turn the telly off whilst I went back to the PC, therefor I could hear the TV whilst I [s]played with my willy[/s] answered emails.

Junkyard #stopthoughtfortheday

I quite like Thought for the Day 🙂 It's often the only time I think about anything important, rather than just what I'm going to eat, how much work I have to do, worrying about life in general etc.

Not religious but I like the ethos.

Thought for the Day can sometimes start promisingly, but then a virtual one of these is produced:

[img] [/img]

and God, Jesus, The Prophet, or a Hindu or Sikh deity is forcibly inserted into a previously coherent, but not obviously religious, piece....

I've always assumed that Thought for The Day is just there to give the Today presenters time for a quick trip to the toilet between news bulletins.

This is a bit like when some people got upset at Martin Sheen demonstrating against the war in Iraq, because he played the president on TV.

Rabbi Lionel Blue was often very amusing and definatey confirmed it was "thought for the day". Can't see what people's objection is as its as relevant as any of the guff that get spouted on the today programme. They don't do news any more the do speculation and presenter ego massage. Just do the news and then get some decent stuff on the radio. Yesterday's afternoon play was great, get more stuff like that on between 7 and 9 am.

Indeed. Always a relief when it turned out to be his turn.

Er, really?

An hour or so of Today programme in the morning sets me up for the day. Remember folks, take any news or current affairs with a critical eye/ear.

I used to hate it, now I simply turn it off when they start/can't be bothered with it. If anything they should either allow humanists to have a thought for the day or simply rename it 'Religious Thought for the Day'. And if you're going to keep it religious allow all religions a chance. It would be interesting to get the Jedi (not ukbikeskills, though I don't know..) point of view, or scientology or devil worshippers etc.

Perhaps put klaxons before and after it too.

Was watching it last evening because I saw one gorgeous blonde babe singing solo but generally was just being curious of watching the "ceremony" and the facial expression of those people singing ...

As far as the programme goes it's rather relaxing knowing that the weekend is over.

Given the subject matter/content and the time it is on, Songs of Praise seems an ideal displacement activity for teenagers across the nation procrastinating about doing their maths homework due in the next morning.

Also, it is just what I would expect from a public service broadcaster in a constitutional monarchy whose head of state is also the head of the armed forces and "defender of the faith" of the Church of England. When my tax contributions stop funding all that, I will write in and complain about my TV licence funding songs of praise. *runs for cover*

This is just an opinion as someone of deep faith tries [ often with no subtly ] to shoe horn the latest events into an explanation of their deities mystical master plan - bit like you subtly shoe horned that argument in though I suspect they mean what they say more than you do 😉
I dont really object to it per se just when it is on and that their is no non religious option. its like the compulsory act of worship in schools it just hard to avoid as it is always delivered irrespective of your view - why not broadcast it on Long Wave or give it a nice tune like the Shipping Forecast 😉
FWIW the presenters are not allowed to comment on that section either just simply introduce it.
It reminds me to switch the radio off and get up though so its not all bad.
Of course christians/ther religioys deserve their own programmes just like every other niche type be it celebrity "the Voice" or whoever it is that watches perido dramas

Yes, it is a shame that, in some senses, the UK is still lagging behind much of the rest of Europe, somewhere in the Middle Ages. I can never quite fathom the fawning forelock tugging and homage to a publicly-funded pseduo-Disneyland-dwelling family (gaw bless'em) protecting our faith -from whom?

When my tax contributions stop funding all that, I will write in and complain about my TV licence funding songs of praise. *runs for cover*

Well, we can only hope that it happens soon.

I have lived in both the Netherlands and Germany and I would say that religion is much more firmly embedded in public life in both.
