Or do you want to explain to him why due to having liver cancer a transplant meaning he sometimes struggles to even muster the energy to feed himself that he's a scrounger.

All the pies, the 3 generations of worklessness myth was debunked during the coalition government era.

Would be nice to see a programme on tax payer fraud, lets see if George Osbourne is giving vfm for his constituents when juggling a number of jobs. These tired old programmes are an embarrassment to the producers, complete lack of imagination, and smacks of the beeb trying to appease the tory government to go gentle with them come the next charter review...

Than they changed the rhetoric from saving money to being fairer. What's fair about what happening to that grandmother? Even the ones on the program that I have little sympathy id be quite happy for my taxes to pay for if it was for the greater good. After all society lets those at the very top milk the system for much more, but that's for the greater good as apparently they are wealth creators that the country can't do without.

i was brought up on a council estate full of people like this. my mam still lives there.
whole families of scrounging wasters, who think it is their given right to be looked after by the tax payer.

A banker, a Daily Mail reader and a Romanian immigrant sit down with a packet of 12 biscuits.
The banker takes 11, turns to the Daily Mail reader and says:
'Watch out, that Romanian wants your biscuit!'

Ask yourself who gains by programs like this?

How much do we waste on paying benefits to scum? Really?

Ton, you need to examine your emotional overreaction to this issue, fella.
I'd maintain that bringing up kids that have a potential to earn and pay tax when they reach maturity is worth the current costs to taxpayer.

He is able bodied ,a total **** and should have his benefits capped and then killed.

I'm not Labour, Ton but I'm clearly a socialist, There's a lot more to it than simply fair pay for fair work. The Labour movement was founded on socialist and Union principles, the stronger come together to protect the weaker, everyone in society provides value weather it's obvious or not immediately evident. Child rearing is vital to the community and the country. The days of the man being a breadwinner for the little wife have gone, but it's vital we support mothers that are working just as hard rearing our future, as a manual grafting builder.. Its work, just a different kind

Can I join in?

Prisons are fairly overcrowded, by a lot of workshy shitebags who'll never be any benefit to humanity. They still get out & breed though, & carry on claiming benefits.
I've stopped referring to some prisoners as 'pondlife' because pond life is/are vital to the ecological system of the planet.

Workshy, or unable to find work in the communities where industry has been decimated by ideologically neoliberal parties since 1979, so turning to crime where the only other choice is benefits.
I'll refer again to the JRF study in to unemployment and economic inactivity brings the actual unemployment figure nearer 6 million, with an available vacancies of 500000 at any one time.
I've told the tale of ten dogs and one bone on here before, the outcome never changes and nor can it

Some (not all) are workshy, & have admitted it, IE, 'why the **** should I work when I can claim/graft' (burgle & rob, basically)
A large % of the prison population have no interest in work on release, even though a big majority have the opportunity to learn beneficial skills in prison.

They've been systematically excluded from society by a clear lack of opportunity to advance, since before leaving school, so is it any wonder they turn their back on society and "own" being a grafter?

i don't think there's any debate needed here. the country is absolutely riddled with scumbags with no aspirations in life only to smoke , drink, get high and shag and pop out a brood of 6 +. you would have to be living in a bunker to have not seen it for the past 30+ years. why would you make a effort when your born into a cesspit and get everything handed to you at the expense of the decent normal , moral living chunk of the population.

The sooner a guaranteed basic income scheme is implemented in this country then the sooner we can avoid the sneering that those who claim benefits are subjected to by those in a more fortunate position.

I love all this talk of 'topping up the coffers' and 'somebody has got to'. The reality is that unless you are earning a lot more than prison officer wages then your not even paying for yourself mate.

Any hospital treatment, pension, child birth ect and you're being looked after yourself...

Why do people still fall for these types of programmes? Surely you know the script by now?

Because I have cousins that are exactly like that (I have nothing to do with them BTW):

Mum and dad never worked officially
Dad does the odd cash-in-hand job to buy more fags
5 kids by two different fathers
Dad drinks a lot and smokes too
5 bed council house they pay sod-all for
Big screen TV's, Sky package and Ipads
1 of the above kids who has had two kids by two fathers
She doesn't work either with a 3 bed house 'that she deserves'
Always complaining about how 'hard done by' they all are but never actually doing anything about it.

They're not the only ones on their estate like this, hell they're not even the worst!! And this is not some inner city ghetto or abandoned council estate, it's in a wealthy area in a National Park. My mum worked out that, as a family in total, they get roughly £35K of benefits every year 😯

The benefits system is designed to help people in genuine need (like Drac's example) and I don't begrudge that at all but when you can see extreme spongers draining the system in your own family and on your own doorstep you very quickly get a polarised opinion of the situation.

Misdirection. Make a TV programme about some scroungers subbing it off the state so that the masses will lap it up and won't notice how the establishment is screwing them over to the tune of £Billions every year.

And it obviously works.

Switch your TV off and stop watching propaganda like this.

A basic income would not come close to supporting families like those in this programme. They would take basic income ++++

If the state pays benefits that allow people who don't want to work to keep not working thats what they'll do. If having young kids means you "cannot" work that's what people will do, doubly so if benefits increase fhe more kids you have. Most people don't have 6 kids as they can't afford it.

http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/uk-population/

Absolutely staggering figures if correct, the world population has pretty much doubled in my lifetime from ~3.8 billion in the early 1970s to ~7.6 billion today.

The UK population has increased from ~55 million to over 65 million over the same timescale, ~18% increase with more of us living in urban areas, while the median age has risen from ~34 to ~40 (no doubt due to net migration).

The UK is doomed round about the time when many of us on these forums will be retiring, around 2040. By ~2060, once we are pushing up the daisies, things might improve again (depending upon population size and net migration levels).

How did we let the benefits system get so far out of control? The 50p Housing Benefit cap might cripple some claimants, but it could also force landlords to reduce rents, rather than "endless" Housing Benefit money encouraging them to raise prices.

How is that due to net migration? Isn't it mostly to do with baby boomers living longer but their kids having fewer kids of their own?

The lowest recorded annual number of births in the twentieth century was 569,259 in 1977.

Some rose tinted glasses on this fourm. How many of yous live or work in around council estates? Stop trying to polish it up, the amount of low life scum is real, and they are taking a fair whack of money. Then on the other side you got 'lords' getting £300 per day to sleep. Which is no better.

Would anyone like to swap lives with any of those depicted? Personally i think a benefit cap is a move in the right direction but provision of decent public sector housing should come first, most of the headline figures are pretty much down to sky-high rental costs

Fair enough, so it was the boomers themselves not having kids.
Still doesn't answer the migration point.
