Anyone else watching? Pure genius I reckon. I was there, but this seems even better than I remember...love Jonny Greenwood's playing, but the whole band were just on point!

Watching it now. Magical. Can’t seem to hear Johnny’s guitar though?

"Just" was supreme, especially the guitar outro (an all time favourite).

Just got me thinking; my daughter's had numerous festivals cancelled this year and last, meaning she's never actually been to one yet. Got to feel sorry for all involved, so many are missing out on these kinds of experiences...

As good as this is, I prefer the 2017 set. Both utterly brilliant.

Was there. Awesome set, especially with the random fireworks. BBC 2 are showing REM from 1999 after as well. Think I was there for that one as well.

Brilliant

A sound absolutely apt for the times we are in and how many of us are feeling..... Worn out

While York's vocals are really rather special.

Saw the doc before this Radiohead set, recognised being there for P J Harvey in her pink catsuit, and the Prodigy (not sure how they made the field shake, but it definitely did)

One year we took the bus from Bath to Glasto to see how far we'd get with no tickets. Within 10 mins of getting off the bus we got offered entry for a fiver each on a heavily recycled Pilton village guest ticket. Got in, no dramas. Lots of great things fell in to place that weekend, ending up as guests of some people from Real World studios thr9ugh mutual friends, it was a blast! Happy days...

The version of Fake Plastic Trees in this set is a real goosebumps moment for me, just perfect.

Never been to Glastonbury, but have been listening to/watching this and all the stuff on Radio 6.
Just brilliant.

I really missed out, didn't I?

My personal experience was of the arse end of the free festival scene.
Whilst much of it was wonderful, by the time I was old enough to attend, most of the magik (sic) had gone, to be replaced by The Brew Crew, intimidation, bad drugs, inhuman policing and even worse karma.
It was like watching Eden burn.

Watched this on the projector. With surround sound and a huge sub. Then went onto YouTube for more. Thank you Apple TV. Can recommend Gorrilaz with snoop dog.

I miss Glastonbury. Never been, but I like it on the big screen. The quality of the cameras has improved dramatically since 1997.

I played cricket with a guy in the 90's, he was somewhere between the 1's and 2's (I was skippering 1's at the time) so didn't really know him particularly well. We were about the same age and he was so cool but really quiet and reserved, and I wasn't (at the time)

Anyway, at the end of any game we'd always check who was available for selection the following week and this one week he said he wasn't for the next few because he was away 'on tour'.

I assumed he meant cricket tour but on asking a bit more became clear it wasn't. Turned out he was doing live sound engineering for Radiohead at the time and had never thought to mention it before.

He also part produced a couple of their albums, including The Bends and specifically High and Dry

AND HE NEVER EVEN MENTIONED IT

I've never seen Radiohead live yet.....

While taste is entirely subjective, I cannot understand how you have come to this conclusion.

Most overrated band of all time.

Of the vast number of bands who won be in contention, I'm not sure Radiohead are near the top.

Gutted that I missed it last night, my own fault for having big ride yesterday followed by an early night.
I was there and I still get goosebumps thinking about that set, in my opinion, the best ever on the Pyramid stage. We bumped into Thom the next day and he said that it was just incredible and humbling experience for the band. A Glasto classic!

My only time there so was fortunate to be in the crowd for Radiohead. Remember them turning the lights down. If only we knew twenty odd years on we'd be on a bike forum reminiscing!

Just search YouTube for Glastonbury and have your own retro festival. That’s what I’m doing tonight.

Rather than create a new thread then, what is your top Glastonbury....

1/ set

2/ moment

1- Has to be Pulp 95. My first Glastonbury with my then girlfriend (now wife), a Glastonbury veteran - OK, she'd been twice before. I was disappointed that the Stone Roses pulled out but the way Cocker (still alive btw) played the crowd and the atmosphere through the whole set was stunning.

As The Wedding Present (my favourite band of all sang) 'if I could live one day again that day would be the one'

2- Hmmm.... it could be

i/ the night before the one above. We were in a similar spot on the Pyramid stage field watching Oasis, craning necks and looking past people to see the band, when my wife started nudging me. Right in front of us, the very people we were trying to see past were, once you realised, very distinctive, particularly a 6'2 lanky northerner in thick rimmed glasses. And having a friendly disagreement about staying for Oasis or going to see Prodigy on the other stage - but JC (it was him obvs) pulled rank declaring they needed to 'check out the opposition'

ii/ REM, 99. Everybody Hurts. Just as it was getting dark, a bit of mist in the bowl, slightly chemically / herbally enhanced. The set was OK, but this was just an amazing moment.

iii/ walking between fields one evening, maybe even after the main stages had finished we were passing the comedy stage and the crowd were crowding out from under the tent. Clearly something special was happening, so we joined the throng, managed to squeeze to a place where we could see ...... and a bloke with a Bontempi organ and a giant paper mache head and a small puppet version of himself were holding court. You know he was......he really was!

If you think it's a music festival, you've missed the point.

I've never been to Glastonbury, but all our friends like to remind MrsMC how she slept through the Shamen despite being 10 feet from the stage c1995

This may be linked to the fact that the smell of Southern Comfort makes her retch 🤣

Went in 97,98 and 99. Radiohead were definitely a highlight of a very wet year. If I remember right, when they were playing No Surprises there were fireworks going off in the background too. Magic.

I went 6 times between '92 and '99.

Stand out moment for me was my arrival at 3:00am on the Thursday for my first time and not knowing what to expect. We came in through the gate at the far end of the car park and hiked with our kit past the NME field and the "town" before heading up to our spot at the top of the pyramid field near the farm house. The noise, lights and general mayhem of it all on that 30 minute walk will stick we my forever.

Bands wise: Rage Against The Machine, Billy Bragg, Prodigy, Pulp, Radiohead, Oasis, REM, Robbie Williams, The Shire Horses etc. All brilliant.

Simple Minds were shite though.

Haven't we suffered enough this last 18 months?

😉

Never "got" them myself, despite being a keen indie kid in my youth.

But the most overrated band in the world is clearly The Beatles.

I can’t remember which year it was but I remember it being very special at the time. We were walking back to the campervan field through the theatre field and all of a sudden a spotlight was shone into the sky to illuminate a fairy flying over our heads. First one but then gradually the sky was full of fairies.
That was the first time I’d encountered the cirque du soleil.

😆😆😆😆. I was at The Shamen, had wanted to see Portishead but couldn't get within a mile of the acoustic tent and the shrooms demanded I needed some space...The Shamen were the best I could find.

Best set and best moment, hoping off on my crutches on my own to see Johnny Cash.
I remember little else about my two visits tbh!!

I went once in 1992 or 1993.

The year the orb were headlining ( they were a bit dull as a headline act tbh).

It was the year dance music arrived there apparently, though you still had to go to a clothes stall rather than a stage if you wanted some house or techno.

I don't remember many of the official acts though. Just that the velvet underground were crap and Spiritualized sounded even more intense than usual on the Sunday night (as I lay semi comatose on the grass).

Has to be Pulp 95.

Although that was a famous set, all the cool kids were in acoustic tent watching the 'secret' Portishead gig.

I was disappointed that the Stone Roses pulled out but the way Cocker (still alive btw)

I must be missing joke here - why would you need to point out Jarvis Cocker is not dead?

A slightly more on topic fact is that the reason the Roses pulled out is that John Squire broke his collar bone - while mountain biking.

That was the NME stage, I think they played on the Saturday after jamiroquai & stereo mcs.

You're right about the blanket stall - Joe Bananas was always the home of the ravers back then 🙂

Watched that on iPlayer last night. Such an exciting moment for them at the time (and those of us following them “pre-success”). Felt like all their hard work for so long was finally vindicated. The crowd were so into it.

This doesn't warrant a thread of its own so bear with me but watched the stooges from 2007 last night. So enjoyable

The one where Iggy got the young fans to storm the stage. It was all the first two stooges albums cos Ron was there

For me 2007 is not that long ago but Iggy was only 60 then, the Asheton brothers looked and played great but now they're both dead. 2007. Eh? Where does the time go.

Seriously, and 24 years since the Radiohead set. I can't get my head round it. I'm going for a lie down

I saw the Stooges at Hammersmith that year and it was one of the best gigs I've been to. Maybe the best.

Despite seeing a lot of awesome bands in smaller venues when they were starting out back in the 1990s.

If you think it’s a music festival, you’ve missed the point

This

Plus if you have ever watched it on TV you really cannot comprehend the scale of it as it is now. It's more like a whole load of completely different festivals squished together.

Back on topic, never got into Radiohead, but still appreciate this set

Nice to see some older footage getting on iPlayer this year, distinct lack of flags, smartphones, and video walls!

I'm just catching up with this years Worthy Farm live stream on iPlayer, and currently am totally besotted with Wolf Alice's stone circle set. For a set recorded in an empty field it's incredibly personal and endearing 🙂

1/ set

Moby, 2000, on the Other Stage. It was drizzling and he had these incredibly powerful green lazers that were glinting off all the raindrops. Pure magic.

I can't find any videos that quite capture it but this is from earlier in the set:
