Can you download radio progs off the British Broadcorping Castration in MP3 (or similar) format to play without Sounds and offline? I don't mean podcasts, just normal content say a play or a comedy show?
I can get the odd jobbie via podcast but not the stuff I really really want.
Thankyou please.
No in a word
If you are quite up with your IT skills it can be done, a guy a few years ago used to have a Site where you could download the programs but he was asked nicely by their lawyers to stop (his words not mine).
You can only download to play in sounds but you can play it offline
That thing a few years ago was a cracker. It was pre Sounds and I used it a lot for compiling interesting content for listening to when touring.
The device I have dunt have Sounds so can't play via that. I want to use without phone/gubbins/stuff, just a watch. If possible.
Why not use sounds? You can download tonnes of BBC content to listen to offline. Comedy, docs, drama, plays etc.
My watch doesn't support Sounds and I don't want to carry a phone.
Ooo that looks like it may be similar to what was around a few years ago until the BBC issued their cease and desist...

It is their copyright, after all…
Love BBC sounds, there are some real pearls in there!
Yes eg Alexis Sayles imaginary sandwitch bar
I haven't used get_iplayer for years. Does it still work?
There was a Windows version available around ~2010 that did similar. Before iPlayer, GitHub etc It was like a soft PVR for radio - A* 'They' stopped it. I know it's 'their' copyright but when content is as easily available as it is, 'they're' unlikely to be disadvantaged by use of this type of 3rd party software.
BBC want all users on sounds so restrict recent output to sounds. Shame but that's the way it is.
At some point I expect you ll need to enter your licence ref to access content.

Which would be fine if they'd get the damn Sounds to work properly! Listening to BBC radio on the sounds plugin for Sonos and I'm forever getting "access denied" messages. But then you switch to, say, TuneIn or Sonos Radio and it plays annoying messages saying "this stream is going away, please switch to BBC Sounds"

Amen brother, it's excellent.

I'm guessing there is no workaround for this? Got two streamers that are saying this and 6 music is by far my most used source. Other than Bluetooth from Sounds (not ideal in any way) I can't think of a solution.

Its brilliant. There are some superb podcast documentaries on the Five Live site. A few corkers I've listened to recently:
At the risk of going off topic, anyone got any other favourites they'd recommend?

Huh?
Love Sounds though I'd like the live broadcast to buffer a few seconds as 6 Music keeps dropping out while driving.
Annoyingly before Sounds when it was listen again, it used to be broadcast I think in MP3/4 format and my Pure radios could find and play old programmes direct. Now that's not possible and they're ive radio only. Shame.

The streams are switching to DASH or another format that is more data efficient. It looks like TuneIn and other software providers should be able to fix this with an update though the user will need to confirm their location to access the high bit rate streams rather than the global 90kbs stream. Those who like a bit of command line time can install Minim Server on a NAS and use that to stream HQ sound in the home. NB Minim Streamer is a paid install.
Kitchen cabinet and food programme. Also food chain. You get my main interests 😄. Love Jay Rayner. He does a good podcast of his own called out to lunch where he takes celebs to lunch and talks to them. That's not on sounds.
Curious cases of Rutherford and Fry starts again soon.
I've found a lot of the podcasts are available via Spotify. Can that be downloaded to your watch
Alfie Moore is great
As is Ed reardons week.
https://archive.org has some bbc stuff that's no longer on sounds.

For other (non-BBC) stations I've had some success finding a direct link to the stream and saving that as a favourite in the Sonos app, but my guess is that BBC stations may not have such things because of the switch mentioned above?

The BBC has also been trying to cut off TuneIn and others for a few years now; apparently the BBC was miffed that they weren't getting the level of use data (users, streams, duration etc) that they wanted. They had to delay it on Sonos as there wasn't an alternative until last year when the BBC Sounds plugin was finally ready. But it gives them a useful pretext of course
Aah so it's not about copyright it's about useage data?
That makes sense in a world where they need to constantly justify their existence/charging method.
Beat Surrender podcast for anyone that likes a bit of decent music.
