ive got a standard shaver socket in my bathroom and I thought I'd be able to retrofit my clippers with a compatible plug so I could use it rather than trailing an extension lead in there. Now it seems such an item is not available anywhere to buy (I guess so I don't write up a toaster and an arc welder to it) so is there any way of me safely and legally plugging my clippers in in the bathroom?

Just use a travel adapter. You may find your clippers have an earth if UK spec which the shaver socket won't have

It's a slightly different size - it may fit, but will probably be slack.

[edited to re-phrase and not come across as quite so much of a plum]

No, they're different sizes. US one will probably fit though, if the shaver socket has those D-shaped connections.

TBH though, I wouldn't want to be using as appliance in a bathroom socket that wasn't designed for one. There's a handy equation you can apply here: Bypassed earth cable + live leakage to chassis + damp beardy man = death.
