So, I am a noob at this. Not quite so green as to give my real name, save some routes to my house and name my bikes - but close enough.

How can I download a segment in the local woods I have found? Quick google reveals a work around, I can download a GPS file and then use a Garmin - but I do not have one.

Is there no way of having your current position and underlayed the section you are trying to emulate?
Does it purely plot your route and allow you to make segments and compare with others, you then use a map to work out their segment and then you emulate by paper map/memory?

Thanks for any advice.

What are you trying to do? Beat the time? Gps the ride and plead it and it will rank you against others who have ridden the same route...

Or do you want to download the route and play it whilst you ride? If so, you need a gos device, smartphone that tracks gps routes will work...

Oruxmaps but it takes a wee bit of set up to get it to track back on a route. I use oruxmaps but simply use it to track my ride then I upload it to a couple of websites.

Oruxmaps allows an email address to be entered, I have this set as the Strava bulk upload email address so once done I use the option to send via email as gpx and off it goes.

It is free as well and can do a huge amount of mapping stuff, I use it for basic stuff, just tracking.

I have the strava app - but cannot work out how to follow a previous route that has no roads i.e. in a large wood. Am I missing the obvious?
Downloading Oruxmaps - many thanks.

Forgot to mention...you can install offline maps on the device with Oruxmaps - so if you are riding an area, get the mobile map creator doodah (Mobac I think it is called) and grab the area in various details...then you don't need a data connection when out and about. When you install the GPX file it will also appear on the required map and give you the route AND a map to allow you to work out where you are.
