The wife want a basic smart watch so she can see messages and time while she' riding her horse (so she doesn't need to get phone our of pocket). Needs to connect to an iPhone.

No way will she won't pod-out for an iWatch! 🙂

There are load of Chinese 'brand' ones on Amazon, but no idea if any are any good. She had been using one my daughter gave her but it's now died.

Would I give a random knock off brand of dubious origins unfettered access to my smart phone?

Think I would pass on that myself.

How about a basic Garmin?

Used Apple Watch 3. Decent enough that I didn't NEED to upgrade mine, but recently went for a stainless steel Watch 6 at a huge discount in John Lewis sale. I like the 6, but the 3 is fine. CEX is the place to find them, although they price gouge the straps and sell separately.

You didn't give a budget, but sub £100 will get you something. Stealth ad, mine is in a box next to this desk.

Garmin doesn't allow you to respond to messages if using an iPhone. So I'd count that out.

You can get an Apple Watch SE refurbished from Apple for £219, is that too much?

Series 4 onwards Apple Watch are fine and still get current software. You get refurbished one for not a lot over £100 these days.

Else most of the fitbit range (the "tracker" line, they do full smar****ches too) will show calls/text/calendar stuff, they're smaller, battery lasts longer that a typical smar****ch. Support list here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1979.htm

At the end of the day, it’s all about how not-crap the app is.

afaik, amazons are shiite.

I’ve got the previous iteration of this:

Deal: Xiaomi Smart Band 7 https://amzn.eu/d/3xoF4aq

the supplied straps are designed to fall off, so it’s worth investing in:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404262442544?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=fbva5islrvs&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=gwW0qHEeSsW&var=674158650993&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

The 7 is bigger than the 6, so you’ll need the right strap.

Anyway, I’ve found the 6 to be excellent. Does the sleep tracking and blood oxygen too👍👍👍

no requirement to respond to the messages so I'd say a forrunner 45 or something similar. Loads of cheap refurb garmins around that do this perfectly.

vivoactive has a touchscreen instead of buttons, this can be a plus or a minus

does no-one make a mount for a edge on a horse yet?

Garmin doesn’t allow you to respond to messages if using an iPhone.

I rather suspect that it's more the case that Apple doesn’t allow you to respond to messages if using a Garmin.

I’ve got a fitbit and can pick 2nd hand up for under £50.

does job in terms of telling time, shows messages and records steps.
