Hi all,
I am looking at a bike on Ebay for my daughter - it is close enough to collect, but the seller only lists paypal or cards as payment, and no returns.
If I were to 'win' I'd ideally pay cash on collection (so I can check if the bike is as pictured).
If I can't do that, where do I stand if I pay with PayPal and the bike is not as described when I arrive?
Do I refuse to accept and ask paypal to refund?
What if there was something that I would expect a reduced price for - eg if pedals needed replacing, or more scratches than described?
I am not out to knock down the price, but the seller says the photos show the only defects, there are no decent photos of the rest of the bike... It appears a sale has already fallen through.
Anyone have a view?
Pay by PayPal once you are there and have viewed the bike?
Message and ask seller for better pics?

This. No reason to pay in advance. If the seller is demanding it for some reason then probably best to look elsewhere
TBH, the scenario you describe is of more risk to the seller. It's a classic scam: pay through the system where there's an audit trail, collect in person then file a "goods not received" complaint.

I didn't know they did swaps.
@Cougar You can't file goods not received complaint, because ebay started using 2D barcodes and the seller can prove the local pickup actually happened. The seller takes a picture of the code that is generated from the buyer's ebay app.
So, when you go and collect make sure you've got internet, or save the barcode as a picture or just print it. The seller will not give you the goods if you turn up without the code
The seller may have just forgot to tick the boxes for other payment options beyond Paypal.

Fair, that's news to me. Thanks.

I’ve messaged to clarify they say it is as new... it has some rust and a oddly worn grip and appears a bargain so am wary, but also if the poor pics put people off I might get it cheap!

What you got in your fleet to swap for my 10yr old daughter?
She’s been stored in the house when not in use, but has a few scars. Well looked after, too many receipts to list... would be good for jobs around the house/cleaning chimneys etc. Doesn’t come with her own bike though 😉

At which point I’d walking away
So would I. An as new bike does not have rust or worn out grips on it. They are simply lying and I have bought items before (and returned) where the seller somehow though the item was in perfect condition yet it was far from it.
If you do go ahead then pay for it when you have seen the bike as will save the hassle of getting your money back afterwards. If the seller wants payment before you see it then again, walk away.
