Looking for somewhere to stay over the Christmas period in the Lake District. Does anyone know of any basic cottages that are not crazy prices? Only for two people. Lots of them seem to luxury this and that...which we don't really care about.

Thanks

The Lake district is a big area.

Any preferences?

I guess if we had a choice it would be as central as possible with Ambleside being "the centralish point") but really we just want to do some good hill walking/hiking. At that time of year we are not fussy on location

Keswick has a larger selection of cottages etc compared with Ambleside (being larger).

http://www.stybeckfarm.co.uk/accommod.htm The Helvellyn room is a sort of studio apartment. Very basic cooking facilities, sofa, bed, shower. Has a door through to the b&b breakfast room, or its own front door so you can come and go as you please. Was way cheaper than anything else we could find for Fred Whitton weekend.

Christmas is often the most expensive week in the Lakes. More than summer. Plus its one of the most expensive destinations

Usually the towns are cheaper Ambleside or Keswick
