I'm sat here in Criccieth having a great time with 3 generations of the family on holiday and we are plotting and scheming for next year.

Is Barmouth any good?

What is there to do within 1 hours striking distance for ages ranging from 5 to 75? Sadly, no biking activities can be considered.

We like beaches, castles, NT properties and pretty towns.

Yeah it's quite nice in many ways.
Got a lovely long beach with sand dunes for kids to doss about in, some hills to walk up behind, a cool bridge over the estuary, Portmerion to visit(You're near there already, and may have been already)

Coed Y Brenin up the road has other activities besides biking, walking being one, go Ape type things another..
I quite like it, but going out in the evening in the pubs was....interesting.

If you're camping or Glamping, Graig Wen just along the estuary is a wicked campsite(I think it has camping barns or B&B too) and it's a short cycle to Barmouth, or short drive, or medium walk..

I went last year for the first time ever and I loved it. The beach was white the sea turquoise and it honestly surprised the hell out of me. I'm going back again this year.

It's not a pretty town. Couple of nice/unusual shops. Nice estuary to walk along, good wildlife, wooden bridges. Plus this

Barmouth puts you within an hour drive of Dolgellau, Machynlleth and not much further to Aberystwyth. Quite a few things to do in easy reach. Still basically Snowdonia-by-Sea though. If you want different scenery to explore though, base yourself south of Aberystwyth, tons of good beaches all the way along from Borth to Cardigan. Avoid Pembrokeshire though. 😉

Nice big beach up at Harlech, go over the other side of the estuary to Aberdyfi, that's nice.

I stopped off in Barmouth doing the Lon Las Cymru Welsh coast to coast Sustrans route.

Mid-August, and the weather was brutal. Seemed like a climb all the way there from Porthmadog and it rained that hard I could barely see past the end of my stem, never mind admiring any spectacular, well-earned Snowdonian views.

I also took a picture of the Arousal Cafe because Barmouth on a rain-lashed Friday evening was one of the least arousing places I'd ever been.

There was an incredibly pretty barmaid in one of the pubs though, so it wasn't all bad.

Lovely, flat walk/cycle between there and Dolgellau the next day.
