Any cheapy ones come recommended? Budget of around £50, will be used for summer wild camping and the like.

I seem to remember there was a Quechua one that was quite highly rated?

Ta!

My parents and grandparents swear by the Uniqlo 'ultralight' ones.

I've got one of the big big fat Quecha ones. Have used it in the workshop for a few winters and so far so good, seems tough, keeps me warm. A bit crinkly and rustly - when you put it on cold it almost feels as if its got polythene inside it but it quietens down once it gets some body-heat into it

They start to get heavily discounted at this time of year.

For not many bucks more (if you shop around) my Paramo Torres is far, far superior. I picked mine up for £80 although I was lucky to get it that cheap

H&M for me, paid about £22, down from £45. Just had a look but it's gone from the website now.

I've got a Craghoppers Akim body warmer which seems really good (I've little to compare it to but it's well made, warm, and a little bit water repellant). You can get the jacket version online for your budget- it reviews pretty averagely at full price but at a third that price it's probably worth an extra star or two...

Thanks all, some good stuff to look at there. Any experience of the Craghoppers synthetic jacket? I think it's called the Danby.

Everything I've ordered from SP has said delivery in a couple of weeks and then arrived in a few days. I'm not sure what the delivery dates mean any more!

Thats the problem though- it could turn mild in a couple of weeks. He could get it now but maybe two weeks of freezing. They are good for kit that you dont expect in a hurry but then if you need it now?

I bought one of these around late October time from thehut.com - down from £140 to £43.
It's an insulated jacket, but I don't think it's 'down'. I think it's just some kind of polyester fluffy filling - not sure..
But, it has been great so far. Very warm, comfortable, fits me well, a decent shaped hood....

Wouldn't have paid £140 for it, but for £40 it's a bargain.

This one:

but I got mine in black with a green lining, which looks a lot better IMO. Only large sizes left from that site though...

Uniqlo has the ultralight down jackets in the sale, saw them in their shop on thursday

Good value, but didn't need any as I'm fairly well stocked for insulated clothing

We bought some NorthFace "copies" down jackets and gillets on ebay direct from China. Quality briliant at at around £40, mega value. If you want I'll find the links.

Nope no real hurry, not likely to be camping for a few months yet! I saw that SP one DezB, wasn't sure if it might be a bit big for packing up. Looks good for the money though. As do the Uniqlo and Craghoppers ones to be fair!
