high volume ebay shop sellers do this: they find it saves on listing fees to edit existing listing (for free) and raise the out of stock item's price to "no one would buy it" levels whilst they are waiting for more stock, rather than to unlist it completely and then list for sale again when back in stock.

surprising what you can sell something for though, i recently ran out of shimano post to post 180mm mounts - bumped the price to £17.95 for the last remaining one, and low and behold it sold, slightly annoying as i lost my sales history

It is also a ploy of money launderers. Sell something for a stupid price and begin to rinse the money.
With so many listings on ebay makes it very difficult to track the transactions.
