Quote from the article..
Barclays has become the first High Street bank to allow its customers to "switch off" certain types of spending on their debit cards.
The idea is to help vulnerable customers, particularly problem gamblers, or those in serious debt.
However, all account holders can now block their own spending in a number of categories, including supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and petrol stations.
It follows pressure from charities and money experts such as Martin Lewis.

Can't help thinking it's a good idea. I could do with it for Chain Reaction and FFX tools! 😂

I can’t see the point in some of the categories, eg ‘supermarkets’, rather than specific retailers (which it doesn’t let you limit). Is that to get more people to shop at independent shops?
Pfft! Useless! Coke and hookers are cash only

Not really, you set it up yourself, to limit yourself.
I only discovered last week I can enable/disable my debit card via the Barclays app.....

Thanks for sharing your PIN 🙂
I don't know the detail, but surely an addict who really wants to spend can just unblock it again? They are in charge of their own bank account. Or is there some kind of time delay to resist that instant urge to spend?
Seems like a good idea in theory - especially for the gambling etc - but some of the categories, such as takeaways, you have to have ordered the food first so it's going to cause issues when it arrives and you can't pay...? Assuming you're drunk enough to have forgotten about the restriction.
I suspect alcohol or other addiction plays a part in the functioning of this process.

There's a 'cooling off period' thing if i recall - the chap that sits behind me at work was all over the news lately as one of the addicts that suggested this as a feature request to his online only bank ages ago.
Always seemed like a bit of a blunt instrument to me (and I suspect the PR value for the banks concerned is greater than genuine user benefit, but that's unproven).
I think there are other behavioural 'nudges' that would be more effective.
For example, alerting me with a running total of coffee purchases for the month, on each new Costa purchase, or the same thing for my Waitrose 'top-ups' would be perfectly do-able, and help me manage my spending at those places.
I think the idea that you lose instantness helps. If you have to step back and think about it a little, you're more likely to weigh up your spending properly...maybe.
Petrol stations is a really random category too. Sounds like a great drunken prank to play on your mates though. Set it up while he's at the bar, watch the hilarity unfold when he fills up... Top bantz.

That is it, it gives you a block, pause stop where you have to go back and unblock your concuss choice to limit yourself

for a lot of people petrol stations are also 24hr shops.
A card with an attached breathalyser would probably be more useful. Would mean my DVD collection would be a good bit smaller though.
Yip, you can thank a team I was involved with for that 🤪

If it’s anything like any takeaway I’ve ever ordered, if you are paying by card, you pay when ordering, not on delivery. So if it was blocked, it would never get ordered (or delivered)
