I'm off to Barca next Monday for the wife's birthday, looking for recommendations of places to go, things to see and restaurants.
Santa Gula restaurant. Favourite in town. Pla is also quite romantic.
Brightside Tours do a motorbike sidecar tour which was fantastic. Also enjoyed wandering around the El Born area followed by food at Llamber.
2nd Santa Gula, its awesome.
The bike tour is good too, give you a nice overview of the city and is a pleasant way to spend a few hours.
Book your trip to the cathedral in advance, the queue's are very long if you don't.
Santa Gula booked for Tuesday night, thanks all.
What about breakfast? We are room only and I’m not paying hotel prices.
If you're in the old town area, I'd recommend Alsur Cafe for breakfast or brunch. They even recommend cocktails to match the brealkbre dishes. 🙂
Quimet & Quimet for tapas.
And obviously the Nou camp!
Great city - I've been quite a few times recently for work and every time someone that was with me got robbed. Keep you valuables safe in Barca.
Thanks for the warning. Were they robbed or pickpocketed/bag snatched?
Nou camp? Is that something to do with ponceball?
Alsur Cafe. Which one, there are 4...
Tapas24, worth the queue but don't bother waiting for the outdoor tables
Alsur Cafe at Sant Pere Message Alt 4.
For food I’d recommend
Bubo > cafe with perfect patisserie. Heaven if you have sweet tooth
caelis > Michelin stared restaurant great service and captivating food and if you book the table overlooking the kitchen it’s an amazing experience.
Bring a coat, it's bloody freezing here atm, especially in the evening. Don't confuse the Cathedral for the Sagrada Familia, 1st is just off Las Ramblas, 2nd is the famous one and a good walk from other attractions. Theres a covered market just off Las Ramblas that's good for snacking, my favourite place is Montjuic park and the Catalan Palau Nacional.

It used to be an excellent market selling local produce, now it's just another place selling stuff for tourists. Not surprising a lot of locals detest tourists. Barcelona is a place that suffers from its success as a tourist destination. There are six times as many tourists in Venice as inhabitants. You can't do much about the problem but you don't have to be part of it. I much prefer Taragona as a place to spend a weekend. The old Roman capital of Iberia, properly Spanish/Catalan atmosphere, good beaches not far away and Port Aventura for the kids (if you don't have any go anyhow but don't tell anyone).
+1 for Tarragona, has the added appeal of being 40 mins from home on a free autopista. Nice harbour area and Roman ampitheatre. Setting off from there next Friday to ride largely off road to Bilbao.
Not sure I agree with Edukator on Barcelona, it's a big city and there are plenty of nice places to stumble across. Maybe it's a similar thought to comments about Sainsbury's, Barcelona keeps the riff-raff out of the rest of Cataluña.
Go to Parc Guell. And the Port. Maybe the Olympic stadium and the Velodrome.
I caught one of the locals with his hand in my pocket. Long before the days of smart phone. So nothing serious happened, he just ended up on the floor in a heap.
I've recently been to Berlin, and would recommend a fatbike tour if they have them.
Pop down to the beach and look out for the naked guy with the tattoed trunks..... no, seriously.....
Buy a HolaBCN card on line before you leave and save 10% on the price. Metro in from the airport is fast and frequent. Card allows trips to Montjuic and all public transport, save the 10 mile walk that me and 'the lad' did last week visiting the sights. There's a couple of apps that TMB do for your phone that are very helpful too.
Thanks for all the tips.
Santa Gula is indeed awesome. Many, many brownie points earned.
Did Montjuic today, the cable cars are good, only got a half day free tomorrow so not sure what to do yet.
