Bar ends. Am I the only one to use them?

I know they are perceived as very uncool and so yesterday, hell even get flamed occasionally by my chums! Don't really GAS what others think!😁

But I find that my HT with wide flat bars with a small sweep and X-lite stubby bar ends, they provide a lot more variety in hand position along with a wide fat grips including positions for hand numbness.

I even have the same arrangement on all the bike!

Just curious.......

I've got some old Onza L Bends in a box somewhere. Used to love them, but I don't do so many long rides any more...

Ergos FTW!!!

Sometimes, one pair of bar ends isn't enough

I'm a fan, but I'm only a tame old school xc/gravel route type rider. Just have the Ergon GP2 style stubby one on my 29er HT at the moment.

Personally, I find them pointless and ghastly looking.

Édit: sorry, i thought you were asking what others thought of them. If not, apologies for blasting my opinion at you uninvited.

I have the CC Ergos on my carbon rigid bikepacking bike. They are brilliant for a different hand position on succession of 12hr+ days.

I hearty recommend them.

There's a fatbiker knocking about that has a set on the ends and a set towards his stem with lights mounted on them.
Looks weird as hell but I'm sure it's functional.

To be fair, his bike looks like he's covered it in glue and rolled around in Halfords.

I use them. Good for pulling up hills.

Ah! Purple anodising a thing of beauty, well, it was in the 90s. I used to have a pair of purple straights myself, swapped them for some Controltech Stix, I think, which matched the Quadra 21R forks.

@johnhe yeah I get that it can look slightly ghastly and often look wrong when set up poorly but from a functional perspective this work for me.

What would be cool to see is a set on an eMTB then they could 'honk' the bar ends on the uphill when the battery is flat!!👍

They were useful on narrow bars, but are utterly useless on 800mm+ bars.

Nothing better than a set of Onza Ti L-bends.

Mind, not sure they'd be useful in 780mm bars, but on 540mm 😍

I use short bar ends in my hard tail XC bike. Can’t understand why others aren’t using as the bar ends make the bike more comfortable when climbing and on the flat. I’ve shortened my OTT wide bars down a bit as well but they are still miles wider than those on my old 90’s Orange.

I'll be putting them on my hybrid when I get it. Cannot find the Cane Creek ones anywhere.

I've got some stubby in-board SQLabs barends on my rigid Pinnacle Ramin that I use for commuting, bikpacking etc

Loved them on the commuter. Can put them on the mtb when I know its going to be a long gravely type of day.

Been playing around with bars on the commuter recently and seem to settled on some on one mollymawk. Looks weirdly shite, but so comfortable. At the point where I'm just fed up with feeling uncomfortable on the bike and don't really care how it looks

I do on my Scalpel for longer rides, just not in the regular place.

I like them inboard of my grips, it allows me to get more aero and is surprisingly comfy.

I’ve  got some lovely silver bar ends from the 90’s on my hybrid. They’re brilliant and great for when attacking the hills of Dartmoor!

Can't make the brand out on my mobile, what make are they?

Cheers!

Never see them around here. They’re known as tree hooks for a reason.

If anyone has some Cane Creek Ergos, the older ones with the lock on collars built in, that are still in good nick and wants to sell please drop me a message! The newer ones just aren't as good

Cane Creek have re-released the Ergo's, I have a set of the SJS ends which I believe are clones. I like them, they're perfect for a commuter/tourer with shorter bars and they'll be getting flung on my P7. Not played with inboard ends but have a set of snazzy purple 90s things I can experiment with if I feel like it.

Yeah, loved the old Cane Creek Ergos for commuting. Managed to find some on eBay but a little spendy. Why are some company's next generation products worse than the previous?

Will probably have them on every flat bar bike I ever have. Saw a French dude with bar ends mounted the wrong way round, and I would never do that.

I’ve got stubbies on my HT and love them. Really miss them on any bike without them if riding any sort of distance. They just feel right, even on fairly wide bars. Would like to try some of those internal SQlabs ones but they were pricey when I looked. Couldn’t care less if they’re uncool.

I recently bought some sqlabs innerbar ends. One of the best biking things I have bought. These are on 800mm tumbleweed bars. Expensive but well worth it.

They are pretty much giving you a hand position similar to the hoods on a drop bar bike so make a lot of sense for gravel roads, easy singletrack, climbing etc,. (the things a gravel bike is good for).
I do think the bars need to be much narrower than today's bars otherwise would be too splayed out when using them on a wide bar.

I see uck pair I. Bound of the shifters when touring 15 years ago. I would do the same again if I had the opportunity to tour again but the riding I do currently no need.

The newer ones just aren’t as good

Reading failure *facepalm*

Though I think @scotroutes may have said tha SJS ones were as good. Or I'm misremembering a thread on Bearbones.

I run some inboard of the grips on my rigid 29er/commuter, a la bri-72. I actually run them inboard of the brake levers, so maybe more like a 'tri-bar' than a 'grip extender'.

But not the SQlabs, just some short carbon ones I had spare.

SQLabs inner bar ends are ace. I've been running them with a Salsa Rustler handlebar on my bikepacking rig and they simply work.

Nice feel even at speed and not too in the way. A godsend on long ride.

Seen these on eBay, similar to sqlabs maybe and bonus of a hinge for easier removal. From china though, hence price. If I’d not got the sqlabs already I’d take a punt on these.

*waves hand* another intermittent bar end user here. I will confess that my inner fashion police cringes at putting them on riser bars, but I do really miss being able to move my hands about on longer rides.

Another advantage of the inner bar ends is you can reach your brake levers of sorts without coming off the bar ends. Well enough for a little bit of braking if needed, bear in mind I’d only be on the bar ends for climbs or flat/fire Road bits anyway.

I took a punt on these and they have been very good. They are branded as spiregrips

Another SQlabs user. Very happy with them.

Just like resting your hands on the hoods of a road bike

Tioga bar ends on both bikes. One flat barred at 590mm, the other with risers at 690mm. I couldn't do without 'em, frankly. It would just feel like something was missing.

Got some Ergon bar ends on the carbon hardtail. Definitely adds hand positions and only negative is steep descents can be a little spicier

Yes but I've always liked functionality...secret! If you go into a bike shop and look behind the display of frame/handlebar/fuel etc bags they still have the wall to display of bar ends ...

Yep. Ergon GP3. I don’t use them for regular single track mountain biking where will normally use a 780mm flattish bar - yet do fit the bar-ends on installing a slightly narrower (and flatter) bar and longer stem for gravel-beasting and/or rough-stuff touring. Love ‘em to pieces. They give a nice rest-pos and most of all a great pistol-grip climbing position which (I believe) employs different/more effective muscle-groups, making a long climb dreamier not steamier 🙂

Use onza ones from the 90’s on riser bars, can’t imagine ever being without them, great for bashing through overgrown tracks.

I 'invented' inboard barends on my last day bike beach ride. Came back resolved to get busy with CAD software and a 3d printer.....then I saw this thread. On the down side, this time next year I'm not going to be a millionaire Rodney. On the upside I've ordered a set of those £9 jobbies and saved a few evenings on Fusion 360 and half a dozen prototypes.

Edit - oh, and actual bar ends on modern width bars - just no.
