Heading to Scottish Highlands on the BH Weekend. Have the option of either...

A) Travel from Preston on Friday evening - Set off at 7pm and camp just north of Carlisle.

or

B) Travel from Cheshire Saturday Morning - Set off at 7am and do the whole thing in one go.

Bearing in mind the BH traffic on the M6, which is my best option?

Only travelled it a couple of times but that far norf wasnt as mental as further down our way. One of the times was definitely a Friday morning of a bank holiday weekend.

You're heading in the right direction TBH. I assumed you'd be saying you were going towards the Midlands and Cornwall.

I'd go Saturday morning and just leave even earlier. The only bad bit is likely to be getting past Manchester.

Travel at night accompanied by huge truck 5mm of your bumper. The M6 is horrible by day.

M6 north of Preston is fine. Imagine you could leave it til Saturday although would be good to get going if fresh after work on the Friday.

Barring accidents, I’ve never seen the M6/M74 clogged with “Bank Holiday Traffic” anywhere north of Lancaster.

Saturday morning’ll be fine I reckon.

If you’re looking for a campsite north of Carlisle....

www.hoddomcastle.co.uk

Two miles off the M74 at J19 Ecclefechan

That campsite looks good PP.

I think getting past Loch Lomond before sundown might be a bit of a stretch.

I'd be going from Preston on the Friday as a) M6 north of there is always fine and b) you get extra time up in the Highlands.

You should be able to get miles north of Carlisle though, we once left Manchester Airport at about 4pm, had dinner in the chippy in Tyndrum and camped behind the Kings House in Glencoe, with easily enough time for a couple of beers before bed.

Leave friday, get as far as possible, means you can easily get a half or even full day extra at your destination without feeling knackered from driving - I've done Oban to Stockport in one hit on a return journey and 6 hours at the wheel (plus stops) left me mentally drained - but then I don't really like driving, you may be different

B&B not camp as you can rock up and get a good nights kip without needing to unpack, set up tents, sleep badly, tear down tents, repack etc. Plus I don't like tents. When we went to Oban, we left Stockport at 4pm, had tea at Tebay and still got to glasgow mid evening in time for a beer and a good night's kip. only a couple of hours then to glencoe on Saturday

I regularly Newton-le-Willows to Dunblane non stop. I've done it there and back in a day before.

I would do as late Friday as you can - once you're past the Lakes it all calms down. I would also go further north to stop - what part of Highlands are you headed for?
