We were at glentress today and were suprised how (realatively) quiet it was. Buzzards nest only about 3/4 full and barely saw a soul on the trails. Bank holiday across the boarder- just wondering if scotland was also off?

It was a Bank Holiday in Scotland. The Banks were closed. It wasn't a Public Holiday, so most other folk were at work.

Doesn't everyone do all the other trails in the area now instead of Glentress?

Hmmm not really, we also miss out on one in August too, tbh the hols up here are pretty different between authorities, I get a long weekend off in September because of some daft horse race frinstance! I only get one day at Easter due to this pish.

We get a day extra, that's all that matters to me, don't care when they are.

Most of Edinburgh and the Lothians had their holiday Monday last week.

Glentress is generally a lot quieter in the car parks than it was years ago. Typically on a Saturday afternoon the top and bottom car parks would be rammed. Nowadays you can find a space with ease. I suspect the increased parking charges had an impact on people parking there. Lots will park in Peebles now and cycle in rather than pay a fiver. In addition, the increased awareness of the offpiste stuff around the valley has pushed more people away from GT and onto those trails

No we don't. We get 8 public holidays (St Andrews day isn't a compulsory public holiday) same as everywhere else in the UK, we just get some of them at different times.

I think there is more of a tradition of adding the public holidays into general leave rather than taking them on the actual day, that's always been the case when I've been working, although that may be industry specific.

The schools were off in the Borders (where Glentress is) as well. Most schools in England are on half term now as well, so it may well be that a lot of usual weekend people will be there during the week instead, or that a lot of families are away elsewhere.

In general, on a sunny weekend I still tend to find the Peel Centre car parks full by 10.00am.

There are 9 Bank Holidays in Scotland.

Only if you include St Andrews day which isn't given to everyone.

Aye, as I said earlier, it's all down to your local authority. We only get Ayr gold cup weekend as all the local councillors get a piss up oot it. South Ayrshire schools still off today, yet North and East Ayrshire schools ain't.

The fair hols are a bygone era too tbh, a remnant from the huge amount of heavy industry which is all but gone...

I think people are confusing public (LA set) holidays and bank (SG set) holidays. There are 8 public holidays in North Ayrshire where people get time off but nine bank holidays as set by the SG where people don't necessarily get time off.

https://www.mygov.scot/scotland-bank-holidays/

bygone era aye, but fair and september weekends(never heard of the ayr gold cup), are still bank holidays we are entitled too, the LAs just decide when they are.

Because the forum is a piece of crap and it can't hack an older version of chrome. Believe me, I'm sick of pointing it out and it being ignored so I'll just embrace it and make a nuisance of it till someone fixes it. I bold my text when using multiple paragraphs so you can differential code from content.

Well in the company I work for those based in England and Wales get 8 days, those in Scotland 9 and those in Northern Ireland 10. That's bank holidays in addition to the 24 days we all get as annual leave. Same as every other company I've ever worked for.

I get 26 days annual leave, maybe that's balanced out for the day I've lost.

bank holidays on top, aye?

I get 27 + 9 bank holidays, makes 36 total. BH's I need to take the mondays, and I usually have to keep 3 or 4 days so I get chistmas and new off straight through, leaves me 23/24 days left to take rest of the year.

I think legally they can count up bank holidays as part of your entitlement though, so they don't have to give you them, just the 28 days minimum of a 5 days week.

Also remember that GT 7 was on Saturday so there will be around 800 riders who really don't want to see Glentress again for a little while.

EDIT 1: I've added a link to: http://tweedlove.com/2018-event-info/glentress-seven-2018 to "GT 7" and it shows as a link in the editor but not when I update the post. Why is this forum so shit?

EDIT 2: but now I've added 1 and pressed submit to update the post the link is showing.

Schools in the Borders were not off on Monday.

The whole excitement of bank holidays is a lot less in Scotland. Scotland doesn’t care about them!

Some of them certainly were. I live in the east of Scottish Borders Council jurisdiction and my partners children (at two different schools) were quite definitely off. I assume that all the schools controlled by the same council will have been off.
