Thought I'd share this on here as I've had good success with minoxidil to help slow down my impending baldness.

First of all I have no big issue with going bald. I'd prefer not to, but I'm not the type to be trying anything and everything to halt the inevitable signs of ageing.

I'd started to go a little bit thin on top. We're probably talking 25% thinner in a wide central channel. I think I'm eventually heading for a Homer Simpson....!

A friend of mine recommended that I try one of the many products (Regain being the best known) with minoxodil in. After a bit of searching around I found somewhere that did it for 30 odd quid for 6 months and gave it a go.

Nothing for the first 3 or 4 months and then....a slight perceptable change that continued to get better. Here I am about 15 months later and it's fair to say that I'm no longer 25% thinning on top at all. Very happy indeed.

Just thought I'd share the recommendation as I've been more than pleased with the results. Willing to take the stick for: Being vain, just shave it, etc etc! For the cost, time and effort required I can't complain and want to pass on my experience.

But does this mean you have to keep using it forever?

What a pain! the only time I dislike it is looking at my wedding photos where the sun was shining through the church windows at just the right angle. Did it's job as the proverbial solar panel though... 🙂

My understanding was you have to carry on using it forever now, is that right? Otherwise it goes worse than it ever would of?

I'm not sure I could be bothered myself. Going bald (and I am doing) is probably the least of my appearance issues. 😉

Yes, you put it on twice per day, every day. That's what puts most people off and also where people fall down, you need to be consistent even without seeing results for a fair few months.

That sounds more effort than it actually is. I put it on at the same time as I brush my teeth, takes 10 seconds max and is just part of the routine. No real effort or thought involved.

EDIT: As to the "if you stop using it it will be worse than it ever was" line of thinking. As far as I know if you stop using it, you will just continue down your natural course. If you hadn't have been using it you would be far further down the line, so there may be a case of your body "catching up" with where it would naturally be. But you won't be balder for using it then stopping. If that makes sense....

I've just realised I've only extolled the virtues of this stuff. He are the downsides as I see them:

- Your hair is slightly greasy after you apply it as it uses glycerol to keep the active ingrediant where it should be. This is solved for me with a quick rub of a towel 10 mins after applying in the morning, or not bothering before bed.

- Embarrassment factor. I'm not bothered and have had a laugh about it with my mates. I can see how some people might not like having a bottle of "magic hair potion" on the shelf in their bathroom.

- Itchy scalp. It's alcohol based, so the idea is you apply it, the alcohol evaporates leaving the minoxidil disolved in glycerol in place. This can have a drying effect causing itching. I had this very slightly, switched to a low alcohol version, problem disappeared.

- Everyone is different. Some people go bald, some don't. Some respond to minoxidil, some don't. It might work for you well, it might have very little effect. I'm unlucky in that I'm going bald, I'm lucky that it seems to work for me. That's life.

- If you're bald it's probably too late. The main effect is to stop things getting worse, with some regrowth possible. Thinning hair will become thicker, etc. Cue balls will not magically stout sprouting! Start it early.

Serious question. Where do you draw the line/stop?

Give it up. Worrying/focusing on it will age you generally more.

Id love to put loads on my groin fur....for a laff 😆

Yul Brynner looked cool. FACT.

I love being bald, if someone said I could have a full head of hair back I wouldn't want it. What hair I have left is kept as short as I can get it, perfect for me, don't have to pay someone to cut it, I guess it comes down to how high your self confidence is....

I've been losing my hair slowly since I was 15 years old , got a bit of a friar tuck going on at the back now and nothing would make me use something that (might) help me to grow some back. I'm really happy how I am and can't understand why people feel the need to mess with nature.
I just get the wahl's out every 2 weeks then go over with a bic .

I mess with nature in many ways. I use anti perspirant, I use fluoride toothpaste, I use a bike. I also use minoxidil...

As to having a lack of self confidence. I use it because I'd prefer to have hair than not, in the same way that I wash because I'd prefer not to smell. It's a choice I make out of preference, not because of a lack of confidence.

What really, really annoys me is when you see tramps and that wandering around with a full head of hair. I want to grab them and shake them!
"you had it all! Tightly packed follicles, no receeding just a thick dense matt of hair on your head and you pissed it up a wall"

And they all seem to have perfect vision too.

Life is SO unfair.

I was going to say "what, like shampoo" but you've answered that question anyway.

full head of hair, age 47. shame it's almost white now. To change colour back to its original would most definitely open me up to ridicule, unless I went for totally ridiculous colours, in which case I'd probably lose my job!

I'm a baldy bastard. Started losing my hair in my mid 20s. Frankly, I wish what little I have left would fall out too. Low maintenance FTW!

I'm not bothered about going bald, but Mrs. Rickos is. She keeps threatening me with Regain as I'm starting to thin a little.

The thing I hate most about going bold is I either get cold or sunburn on my head apart from that not bothered.

Obviously a full head of hairs is there to protect our head.

I must admit, I checked his history to make sure he wasn't a PR gonk for Regaine, sitting in a windowless office posting on various 'manly'* forums. It's the new viral marketing, you know. Clearly not, though, and good luck to him!

*Only really manly men go bald, apparently, something to do with extra testosterone.

You are certainly promoting a product. The only question mark was whether you were getting paid for it. 🙂

Don't worry, it's just that the Spain thread was a recent barnstormer. As long as you don't melt down and post sweary messages and bestiality pictures in your profile, like the poor OP in that case, you'll be fine!

Hora : I refer you to the Dealextreme T&Cs regarding delivery...

Martinhutch: The only recommendation I would actually make is NOT to get regaine! They spend a fortune on marketing and this is reflected in the price. Just go for a generic alternative at a quarter of the price.

Edit: Just checked out the Spain thread! Glad I intentionally avoided mentioning specific brands.

Hmmm.....probably too late for me but I absolutely totally and utterly detest being bald, I've been the butt of jokes about it since being 18. Fat - tick, sweaty - tick, badly dressed - tick. Too late now but this would have been a dilemma had I known about it before.

I don't see the point in hair anyway, so going bald would mean I would't have to waste time and money cleaning & cutting it ...

Think about the poor folk who had/have Alopecia. I know two blokes who had it, one lost every single hair on his head at the age of 18 to date. The other knocked his head and had huge patches missing. Both good looking fellas having a huge knock on their confidence at a young age.

Male pattern baldness is gradual and can be seen/gotten used to compared.

Muke +1

Once you start taking a strimmer to your head once a week, the very idea of ever buying any kind of hair product ever again becomes an ridiculous and unnecessary fuss. Shampoo is superfluous. Never mind any overpriced snake oil.

Its very liberating to get the clippers out on a monday morning, rorm them over your bonce, and know that that's your 'haircare routine' taken care of for the next week 😀

You are certainly promoting a product

He's not promoting a product as such...he's promoting Minoxidil 5%...which is available in any number of products as a solution to baldness and offering his feedback on some of them.

Useful information for people who might be considering it.

Dezb: You know what, you're right, but I haven't got any that really show it. I mean top down shots with plenty of light, etc. Should have done as a comparison, but didn't.

For some reason I used to avoid photos with my head down, hair in shot......!

As someone here has already said, being bald or shaving your remaining hair is probably the best my hair has ever looked. If I could get my hair back, I think back to the photo's of my unruly wavy hair that never did what I wanted it to do, and I would refuse. As for rubbing goo on your head twice a day, jeez, even taking pills when your'e ill twice a day is hard enough without forgetting to do it. As for that photo of what bald men think they look like, well if I had the time I'm sure I could find similar shots of men with full heads of hair. It isn't about what's on your head, it's about what's inside it that counts.
