Back to gym after fractured clavicle

Came off bike in October. Broke clavicle. Left bone to heal for 3 months. No operation. Pretty good aligned repair by all accounts. Started back in gym in January on strong lifts style weight training. Had lost a lot of strength. Now 5 months after the break, legs back to pre- accident strength. Upper body getting stronger but can't yet bench press my own body weight or do weighted pull ups yet. Going 3-5 days per week at as much intensity/weight as I can manage.

After a work out I've feel started feeling a dull ache in the bone.

Am I doing too much, too soon?

Anyone with first hand experience of this situation who can give some insight please?

I've decided to stay off the bike until Easter.

Edit: started back in gym in January.

I broke my right clavicle for the 2nd time in early November(first fracture was in August). It does heal in 12 weeks and you can use it as normal after that. However you should keep in mind that there is still some remodelling and a bit of hardening going on after 12 weeks. I think I’m 16 weeks in and I can feel that the bulge (deformed sticky out bit or as my wife calls it my bat wing) is changing.

I don’t think the fractured bone is holding you back in the gym it’s probably the muscles round about it taking time to rebuild but I’d bear in mind that your bone is still in a healing remodelling phase and take any rebuild slowly.

My recovery has mostly been on the bike. 3 weeks on the turbo then outside. The only weight bearing stuff I’m doing is push ups and these are being build up slowly.

I broke my clavicle 15 years ago. It can still have a dull ache after work with an element of impact such as hammering or using a plane for a long session. It also aches if I get very cold. I have just come to accept it- it doesn’t stop me from doing anything.

I’d say you’re being very over cautious. I was back riding gently (gravel bike on tarmac) after 5 weeks, and was back on the mtb after about 8. Physio started after 6 weeks to try and get my shoulder working again and I think he gave me the go ahead to start gym again almost immediately, but take it easy with anything over shoulder height. Work on movement and mobility rather than moving heavy stuff around.
An ache is to be expected, but actual pain is to be avoided.
