Hurt my back on Sunday - lifting the bike over a gate.

I knew I had done something & it was mildly sore, so I peddled home gently.

Sunday, Monday it was uncomfortable but not really anymore than that apart from odd maneuvers such as twisting to get out of the car.

Last night it was agony in bed & today I am in real pain.

Do I just man up & it will go away in a few days or do I see someone ?

Don't ignore the pain and if you can see a sports specialist (doctor may need to refer you, take an emergency appointment). Short term rest and take some ibuprofen for a day or two (it reduces swelling and pain). I would suggest you buy a freezer icepack and apply that a few times. I have a dodgy back from an old sports injury plus bad posture, I have a few excersizes I do to strengthen it, its about prevention and being aware of the injury, you should treat this as an injury which needs rehab programme and future preventative work.

Rest, if it's still there after a week or so, or becomes worse go see your GP

Paracetamol and ibuprofen alternately 2 hours apart. It's fine to take both as they are different. Take it easy but try to keep as mobile as possible.

Did it feel like a muscle strain? If so hot shower, baths are ok but can be strain again when getting out, and focus the running water on the effected area. If it doesn't get any better within a few days, doctors and or physio.

I'm in the same place, history of sciatica, been getting worse recently, then I pulled a muscle in my lower back 3 weeks ago, sciatica now horrendous and the twenty year old injury that has caused the sciatica has flared up. Been off work for three weeks with another to go. Specialists on 8th April. I've been on paracetamol, declfenac, codeine and diazepam.

I had a long term back problem. I spent a fortune on different therapies but was sorted completely by 5 trips to the physio at the local hospital. Beware of being prescribed cocodamol (?sp), they do lots of damage to your body and your head.

Co-codamol is not pleasant. The reason my doctor prescribes codeine separately. So you can reduce or increase the codeine to suit. The side effects are less too.

The reason for my extra incoherent ramblings on STW over the last few weeks is due to drug fuelled zombifcation.

I've had a few muscular problems associated with my back over the years, and my problem has always been the muscles not being able to repair themselves as they are in constant contraction.
A hefty dose of dihydrocodeine allows me to relax and let the healing process begin.
Properly smacks you out the first time you take it though, and it can be a bit moreish.

From bitter and now expensive personal experience, go and see a physio to determine what you have done, and why.

It will recover with rest. But it may well not go back to where it should be, and it won't deal with whatever weakness caused it. £100 for a few sessions now may save you hundreds in 20-30 years. Believe me.

If it's a sprained muscle it will get better in a few days. If a skeletal problem you need to see someone smartish. Any pain or pins and needles down the backs of your thighs?

Cheers all

Any pain or pins and needles down the backs of your thighs?

Nope, It hurts at the rear above my right hip when I walk or turn in any way.

Gap a GP appointment tonight.
I do know a good sports physio - Might give him a go depending on what the GP says.

Pumping ibrupofen in as we speak - not liking the codeine idea at all.

Get it check as soon as possible.

Last month my back pain was so terrible I felt like a 10 tonnes bus was on my shoulders with pressure onto my lower back/spine. I could hardly walk properly and the pain was immense. I could feel pressure even my by carrying a simple 3 kg bag.

I am sorted now and everything is fine after I went for proper Thai massage (proper ones and not the girlie type).

I've had my back lock up a few times, so I could hardly move. Max dosages of Ibuprofen and co-codamol reduced the pain so I could get out of bed. Generally it's sorted itself out over a few days.

Mines shagged! Years of abuse. Physio does nothing for me other than relieve me of hard earned!
Last injection has long worn off. It was nasty, I've not rushed back to have another...

I had niggles in my back for a while, eventually went to see a chiropractor after it started getting a bit painful, they did wonders. Started to get some minor niggles again recently and other half has a friend who is learning Bowens Technique, so been for the last couple of weeks, really odd as it is very light/relaxation based (if you don't like pain) and it actually works.

OP here.

Think I just pulled a muscle.
Sleep & getting out of bed was excruciating Monday/Tuesday,
but is definitely easing now.

Hopefully will be back on the bike next week.

Oh ya I forgot to mention some back pains might cause erectile or bladder problems so keep an eye on that.

The wee fellow will be so weak it might just refuse to wake up if the back pain is the severe type.

🙂

I have a recurring lower back problem, my advice would be to not ignore it, try to relax it and don't do anything that is likely to strain your back further.

If it is muscle fatigue or strain then hot showers are good.

+1 for physio. It's worth the £40 just to find out what's wrong and how not to make it worse. Better to nip these things in the bud rather than have it develop into something worse. Coming back from a chronic back condition is a lot of effort and takes a lot of time. A lesson I learnt the hard way - 18 months of core exercises and stretching before complete recovery 🙁

I practically could not sleep, walk or sit properly during my worst pain. Once I sat down I could not get up unless I used the arm rest and I was moving in slow motion. Each step was painful put it this way. Felt like someone has put two tonnes of pressure on me and my back was collapsing.

Mine is fixed via traditional Thai massage by my uncle (84 year old) who was ex-kickboxing champion. I wouldn't recommend Thai massage unless you know what you are doing and with someone who you have total confident in.

I injured myself nearly 30 years ago pumping iron being macho man but left it without treating then it flared up badly for the last few years.
