I know that many of you already know about my accident, but by way of easy reference for those who don’t:

On 30 October last year, I was road riding around Yorkshire when, on a descent into Hebden Bridge, I crashed into a stone wall at 40 km/h, and had to be airlifted to Leeds Infirmary. In the crash, I broke the base of my skull, two cervical vertebrae, one thoracic vertebra, a number of ribs, and punctured a lung.

The people involved in saving me, and the many who cared for me (including folk off STW!), were incredible.

Well, I just wanted to say that, as of Wednesday this past week, I have officially been signed off. My most recent MRI shows some minor permanent nerve damage that I will experience in my left arm, but beyond that, I am entirely good to go.

My target now is to lose all the bloody weight I have put on (10 kgs worth), and get completely fit again; but I now have no more excuse.

Thanks to everyone who helped, everyone who visited, and everyone who sent their good wishes.

SaxonRider is go.

Good luck with your fitness and weight loss plans, you seem a lot more focused on this than I was after my rta, the realisation of what I had become took over two years following the end of my Mon-Fri stayovers at the Salisbury NHS Wessex Rehab Centre.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have bought a smart turbo to compliment outdoor rides.

Good news and good luck with getting back in saddle, remember to enjoy it. I had a few years off due to 8njury and it was tough till I remembered why I was riding!!

All me! me! me! with you, isn’t it? Any consideration for the poor wall? Sitting there, admiring the quality of its pointing and it’s fine collection of lichen then BANG! Vicious assault by a Lycra clad hooligan (copyright, daily mail)

On a serious note, well done and having nursed a partner who did something similar, I have loads of respect for you getting back on the bike.

Great news mate. Speaking as someone who had to get back into shape after a forced break it feels great to get back to who you/we were prior to injury/illness.

Isn't it strange, I've never met you but every time I go up mytholm steeps on the way to some off road, I mentally tick "saxonriders wall"...
Good luck with the rehab and your future cycling!

Great news! Not sure what you've got planned fitness wise, but I recommend getting a FitBit (or similar). I had a high tibial osteotomy in Oct 2017 and my wife bought me a FitBit as an aid to getting fit again post op. Amazing the weight you lose from just walking and pushing the step count!

Well done Saxon.
I just had my first ride on Saturday after a 6 week break.
This is the longest I have been off the bike in about 15 yrs and although it has been hard, I have had time to plan a lot of exciting stuff for next year. Now I just need to build up again slowly through the dark months and look forward to 2020.
Set yourself some easy targets to get you going.
Good luck and most importantly ..ENJOY IT 🙂

Sorry about that. 🙁 I can't even remember now what I was doing the day you sent me that.

In any case, the lines are open!

Fitness comes back faster than mental fitness. Great news but go easy first - and ride the scene of the accident (with care). Been there, have the plate and scars to remind me.

Fark me, I thought I was badly off sitting here with a fractured c7 after a Volvo/cycle interface. How'd you do all that then big boy?

In any case, the lines are open!

Saturday most likely - will be riding lunchtimes this week as I'm at home. Just found a very pleasant road route down by Nash where the Wetlands reserve is.

Thats great news, first id heard of it as been away for a bit due to health issues and not riding.
Nowhere near what youve been through but I too feel well enough to start getting fit again, and ive had my first ride in 18 months this weekend.
Great to see you back out and good luck with your continued recovery and weight loss
