Just need a camera to use with an Ipad/iphone?
<£50 night vision essential please!
Just buy an IP camera. We've got the older (non-Alexa compatible) version of [url= https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00XBTRZVE/ref=asc_df_B00XBTRZVE58026583/?tag=googshopuk-21&creative=22146&creativeASIN=B00XBTRZVE&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309904628344&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12451629440662293335&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045888&hvtargid=pla-563114183883 ]this one[/url] and it's been faultless. Better image than any dedicated baby monitor for half the price. Can be moved around remotely, has motion detection (I think, never used it), a microphone and a speaker. Job done.
I'd just be getting a second hand Angel Care or the likes from a Facebook Marketplace/Groups.
Do you really need video for a baby monitor? Never seen the point personally.
Using phone/ipad - how does that work? You leave the app open all the time with the phone/tablet set to not go to sleep? Seems a waste of a phone/ipad to me as you can't do anything else with it at the same time.
Videos are pretty handy tbh. It doesn't play constantly, just when you tap the screen then it goes back on standby (still playing sound of course) after a set period. It just means you can check on why they're making noise without having to sneak into the room
We've not bothered. He slept in our room for the first 5 months. our house isn't so big that we can't hear him if he's upset. We were lent one when we went to a BBQ/evening party at a friends house and put him to bed in the room that we'd be sleeping in later.
Video monitor showed a picture of him sleeping. Or was he? We couldn't tell whether he was breathing or not, so we were really none the wiser. Still went in to check on him, as we would done have without it.
I can see that having one with various temperature and movement monitors being a step up in information, but it all seems a bit much, and possibly just extra things to worry about.
I'd also rather have fewer, rather than more wifi connected devices with poor security in the house. Hearing those stories of hackers talking to their babies through the monitors didn't give me any more enthusiasm for them!
I have never understood the point of video baby monitors, especially so IP ones which introduce all new kinds of reliability and security issues. The basic and cheap Motorolla audio one is really very good, picks up any movement and works reliably.
The only real point of them for us was giving us an early warning that one baby was up so we could grab them before they woke one of the others. Or, with the older one checking if they were up when doing things in the garage.
Although I can see this:
It just means you can check on why they’re making noise without having to sneak into the room
maybe we'll end up getting one later. Who knows?!

Us, sat on sofa: "was that the boy?"
*open phone, check app*
"no, still asleep, good"
*close app*
Why would you monitor it constantly? Surely an audio one is far more annoying in that respect? Just because he makes a noise you don't want to rush in either. I rarely use the sound, just look at the image. Admittedly used it more (both sound and video) when he was younger. Tend to check it now about 15 minutes after we put him down to make sure he's gone to sleep, and that's it.

720p image from the one I posted, you can definitely see if they're breathing if you're the crazy super-paranoid type.
More useful if someone else is looking after him frankly, as is less attuned to his noises, and would tend to go in if they hear the slightest sound. You can also check anywhere if you're out and want to make sure they're still asleep - again, useful if you're the crazy super-paranoid type.
We just got a BT one that does sound and video, plus can be moved remotely (pan/tilt/zoom).
It's good fun if nothing else, once he's awake and moving around you can talk to him through the monitor, always funny to watch his reaction. Also it's just nice being able to watch him while he's asleep without actually being in the room, or being able to go out to garage and still see/hear him while he's asleep.
Had the monitor with movement pad. Pad got disconnected as it didn't like the size of her bed. Useful to hear if she was up, she was pretty quiet otherwise.
Tried the webcam thing with Skype (set it to auto answer) but gave up on that too as it was too much hassle.
You need less things to give you anxiety, not more.
I think some people are overthinking it a bit. I can see breathing on mine, not exactly something I'm checking though. It also has a thermometer which is pretty handy and I usually have a quick look before I take myself to bed - the reason these are handy is that if the room is likely to get too warm/cold or he's in a weird position I can sort it out - therefore giving me a better nights sleep (naff all to do with his sleep)

I don't think anyone is implying that the rush in just because they make a noise

Ok, I guess I'm coming from the angle of using a monitor to be able to hear them if they wake up in the first place due to distance of their room from where we are.
If you can hear them without a monitor then no need for a monitor at all - happy days!
We just use a cheap IP camera. Firewalled for LAN access only. Looking at my pi-hole logs, it tries to phone home to .cn around 5 times a second!
What's good is not having one. Pavlov would not be studying dogs today, he'd be studing parents with baby monitors.
When they cry, you'll hear them. Whren they are asleep, you won't.
^^ But the OP wasn't asking for opinions on whether it is right or wrong to use one, he was asking for recommendations on one.
OP - we had AngelCare ones (nine years ago) with the in-bed sensors. We had a couple of panics with them going off (when one of the girls rolled off the sensor altogether) but other than that they were very good. I'd be tempted to get a video one nowadays though, but having something that not only listened in, but sensed breathing was a great help to my wife when trying to sleep without the constant concern many new parents have.
I still use ours, if i'm on the turbo in the garage I won't hear the kids upstairs making a fuss.
When they cry, you’ll hear them.
Of course its handy to be able to help them out before they're having a full-blown meltdown. Also very good when I'm in the garage on the turbo like Scaled says
We used an audio only monitor until the target discovered she could climb out of her cot. Then we, in haste, bought one of the cheapest video monitors we could find so we could check on whether she was in bed, about to launch herself into the abyss or was up and about.
Our monitor, and presumably non-baby monitors like pet ones, doesn't mute the audio below a certain level, which is really annoying, and has led to many a morning where I'll be lying awake at 4:30am listening to her turn over, paranoid about whether she will go back to sleep or whether that's all the sleep I'm going to get that night...
the Angel Care pad and monitor model has been brilliant for us (non cam model- felt it was unnecessary, tho i believe theirs's is v good), on the second child and no issues at all. It's even survived a few overseas trips in luggage. Durable and reliable, would absolutely recommend to a new parent. The peace of mind was really good for us.

Its so you can stare at it all evening and completely remove yourself from engaging with people who are in the roomwith you.
As far as i can see.
As far as i can see.
We do that if we don't really like our guests very much, yes
That thought had occurred to me 😁
he was asking for recommendations on one
I think my recommendation was pretty clear 😉 . On the turbo in another building, I might concur. Possibly, but for a 30-60 minute session, it wouldn't really worry me. Now mine are a lot older raising them is the issue!
We did have a light (Bedside Bear) that came on and played a tune to noise activation. Still have it 20 years later.
We also have an Angelcare and would recommend...still faultless after dropping it several times. I always like to have the monitor on my belt if I am doing anything around the house such as doing some DIY. Not sure an iPad would be that practical in this scenario - if I hear something out of the ordinary I investigate otherwise I carry on with what I am doing. I also agree with the point raised that a video monitor is an added form of anxiety.
