I've got an awning rail to fix, it's predrilled for screwing and has double-sided tape attached to help hold it in place while you drill and screw it on.
If I don't want to screw it on, Can I just use sikaflex onto the double sided adhesive, or would I need to remove all the tape first, which doesn't look easy as it seams pretty sticky!
Doubt the sikaflex will be designed to stick to tape.
I would remove the tape and clean the rail and where it's getting stuck with acetone.
I removed the sticky tape and then sikaflex to fix to van.
Tape is difficult to remove, i think acetone helped to soften the remaining adhesive.
Also used two lines of masking tape each side the of rail location, so when the sika squeezes out the joint, swipe with a suitable tool to give a clean edge, with the excess pushed onto the tape. I was fixing to curved bottom sill on a van.
i used sikaflex and screwed it on as i wasnt sure the rail would hold up to an awning in welsh wind without a screw as well. screw through the wet sealant for waterproofing.
Never nice to drill holes but if you use enough Sikaflex to hold it you will never get it off anyway if you ever wanted to.
I drilled and screwed mine. Treated the holes with hammerite and put a small amount of Sikaflex around each hole to stop any water ingress.
Yeah, I screwed ours and laid a silicone bead under the rail before fixing it on. It's a 13 year old van though. I might have thought differently if it was newer 😃
Decided just to screw it rather than try to get the self adhesive stuff off. Van is 19 years old so a few screw holes will probably be the least of my worries!
