I recently upgraded my TV+Receiver to a Sony Bravia + Sony DH550. I have a Virgin TiVo + PS3 connected via HDMI into amp. I have an HDMI from amp to TV using HDMI4 ARC on TV. Using the auto calibration on the amp, all the speakers work (5.1 setup). However, when playing from VM, PS3 or TV I cant get anything out of the surround speakers. I've tried playing those Dolby surround tests, and the surround sound comes out of the front speakers. Amp displays PCM.
Any ideas? Maybe a setting somewhere on the amp that I'm missing? Previous amp was a sony, HDMI1.0 so I used optical output/inputs with HDMI and that worked lovely.
Thanks!
It sounds like your receiver is outputting just the 2 channel sound that it is receiving from vm. Have you tried a HD channel? It should at least change to dolby instead of pcm on the reviewer. You may also need to add a surround mode onto your it for vm so your receiver processes it and creates the surround from the 2 channels that it has received.
Same with HD, only the front channels. It actually displays Dolby Digital (2/0) for BBC HD and linear PCM for BBC SD.
It could be the sound field setting

switch to movie mode. On my yam you can set the effect which also included 2 channel stereo
I thought that might be it cheeky! It was AFD Auto 2 channel.. but alas not 🙁
Got it on HD DCS Theatre and still the same. I have noticed sound coming out of rear speakers in a PS3 game though? It said PCM (3/4) or something like that on AV display
If the amp is on AFD it will automatically switch to whatever the input is - most TV stations are only 2 channel stereo. Sometimes films on 4HD and BBC HD are Dolby/DTS. I know when I play concerts on DVD/BluRay it will default to stereo unless I change the audio output on the disc itself to output in DTS/Dolby/etc.
Have you assigned the sound to each channel.IN my experience amps/receivers do not default to playing surround sound and you have to manually assign them to each source (never had a Sony so might be different). Also similarly check that your source devices, VTV, BR player etc. are also outputting in the right format.
Also ARC doesn't necessarily support full discreet channel surround sound so check your receiver manual - I know that will only effect it when you are taking your audio source from your TV so doesn't explain your issues for the other sources.
I tried to get surround sound from a PS3 over HDMI with a new Marantz AV amp and a Sony Bravia TV (without ARC) just last week and utterly failed.
I eventually "solved" the issue by using an optical link between the PS3 and amp - the surround sound burst into life.
Some devices don't support full surround sound over HDMI - my Sky box doesn't so it's HDMI for picture and optical for sound. Again, I know it's against most blokes instincts, but reading the manual sometimes does help.
