Joinery based drawings, ie furniture, reception counters, bars, hotel and restaurant fit outs, i'am wanting to move to apple (imac) what is the general software that people use for my application, cheers

If it's 2D CAD you are after, Draftsight is free and I think works on Mac.
Pretty much AutoCAD, but done by the people who do Solidworks....

I have used Cadintosh, from Lemkesoft, but if Draftsight is available I'd use that.

Draftsight is great for 2D/2.5D once you're used to it.

If you want an entire CAD/CAM toolchain, even with paid software I'm afraid OS X is disappointing. There's way more software out there for Windows, so if you want to do 3D, I'd look into bootcamp, Windows and probably Solidworks.

Vectorworks is available for Apple - decent enough package with a fair number of architectural users but its a bit like Campag vs Shimano and SRAM

+1 on draftsight if you are working in 2D, it free and it's pretty much the same as AutoCAD LT. I also use AutoCAD 2015 for Mac

Try sketchup, it's free but depending on your requirements may be a bit rudimentary
