I'm trying to find somewhere suitable for this year's summer holiday.
Have been to Austria before and like it there but would rather not visit a region that we've been before.
Have already been to Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Berchtesgaden & Garmisch.
Am looking for somewhere that has mountains, lakes, flatish traffic free cycling, hiking, via ferrata, outdoor pools and other fun stuff for the kids to do. Will be staying in an apartment or similar.
Did originally think of Soelden or Mayrhofen. Any suggestions/recommendations?
Not too fussed about MTB as i'm sure i'll find some xc stuff. Somewhere with an all-inclusive lift pass/card (like the Sallback Joker card) would be a bonus.
Thanks.
I can recommend the area around the Faakersee near Villach. I live here and it is a great area in the summer. Plenty of warm clean lakes. Faakersee, Worthersee, Ossiachersse, etc.. Plenty of Mountains around for hiking and Via Ferrata. Also Slovenia and Italy are within 30 minutes. Plenty of easy cycling along the rivers and cross country in the valleys.
Mayrhofen via ferrata are pretty good. Further down Zillertal they get stupidly difficult (some are graded F in the A- E system!)
The vf in Ötztal near Langenfeld are great. The Lehner waterfall route is fab and has an easier finale. The one across the valley is very hard.
Lienz has most of those things and as it's very close to the border you can play in the Dolomites too. Contact me offline if you want more info
Go over the Brenner and into South Tirol... Technically Italy, but still very German/Tirolean. Kalterersee. Nice campsite on the lake shore (boom now). Loads of good riding in the hills or easy paths along the Etsch river. Lots of Via Ferreta, too, thanks to WW1.
Weather is generally better south of the Brenner, too.
dafoxster is right - the Worthersee area is lovely
alpin - yep, the weather tends to be better t'other side of the Brenner. I love the Dolomites and have been many times but compared to Austria they are blummin' expensive.
All the places mentioned so far don't really have the ticket to get you on every cable car, bus, train etc. You'd need to go to Val Gardena area for that kind of thing in the Dolomites.
Mayrhofen or Seefeld/Leutasch. Latter a bit more chilled and relaxing. Easy to get to from Innsbruck.
Further east, Filzmoos was nice for a week or so. Again a bit more laid back. Close to Salzburg.
From memory all had free cards with hotel bookings.
Seefeld's nice, easy to get to/from Innsbruck via train or transfer if you're car free and of course as a day out. Ace indoor/outdoor swimming pool and lake but only been for short, chilled, family skiing so no opinion of summer.

Seefeld also gives you easy access by car or bus to Garmisch, Mittenwald, Ehrwald and Lermoos.
Some nice small lakes to swim in near Biberwier on the way to the Fernpass.
