Here's the thing. I've finally got the cash together to take Mrs Mitch and the kids to Oz next year, to see her brother for the first time in five years. He lives in Melbourne, so there's no point going until their summertime, so we're looking around late October / early November (we can't book time off work this year as we've already used our annual leave entitlement). How soon can I book flights ? - I believe that it's usually got to be no more than 12 months in advance, but if anyone has experience to the contrary, I'd appreciate their advice. I am excite!

My brother is out there too. Been a couple of years ago, maybe back this winter. We kept our eye out for flights trying to get a deal but nothing of note came up. I think we booked ours about 6 months in advance. We were there for Christmas which was a great experience. Totally different to a British Christmas. Christmas eve on the beach then the street got together for a breakfast BBQ Christmas morning while the kids played together with their new toys.

so we're looking around late October / early November

Good call, as it can be too damn hot in mid-summer, especially if you're coming over all pasty and white from a typical British winter - have to hide indoors in the aircon for about a week to acclimatise 😆

11-13 months in advance for flights.
Melbourne is cool a really nice city, would have to suggest tassie for some of the scenery, great ocean road and a few others (mostly including wine) also look at fly in and out of different places. Sydney is worth a few days for the iconic stuff

Note that October is the wettest. Month in Melbourne. No idea about when you can book flights but I would recommend that you allow for as much time as possible - it's a long to come for less than three weeks. Plus you'll want to see Tassie, Sydney etc.

As above, 11-13 months, dependent on airline. Well worth looking at any sales/offers that are about at the moment, as if there's any way of getting further up the plane, you'll really appreciate it! However you cut it, it's a looooong flight!

Melbourne is indeed a lovely, lovely city. Far better than Sydney, IMO. That said, if you're there, a trip to Sydney is pretty much a must.

march/april are better months to go if you can. Oct / November tend to be very unsettled with a huge temp gradient

I went one year - and the temeprature was so cold I had to buy a fleece.
And last time it was 38 plus the whole time.

Sydney and Melbourne are different. Melbourne feels classier more colonial. But Sydney with a great place ...
