You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Evening all,
Just sat listening to music as is my Thursday night routine (Mrs goes tutoring and I put the little un to bed).
Ive got a pretty decent audio set up for someone without being able to run into 5 figures.
Pioneer sclx56 receiver with my front mains being a pair of Tannoy dc6tse floorstanders.
I've got the option to play cd or vinyl, but in all honesty its easier and more fun to stream from my phone as I can listen to latest albums and flick between tracks etc.
I'm currently using a gen1 chromecast plugged into the receiver and I stream using google play (Ive got the unlimeted subscription).
Is there a way I could use my phone to somehow stream a higher resolution audio to my receiver, happy to move my subscription over to qobuz et al and buy another box to plug into my receiver if needed.
I Can really hear the mp3 compression through the current set up and I'd like to be listening to something better.
Any help much appreciated
You changed the quality in your google play app? to "always high" on wifi and mobile network in the settings.
I only listen through earphones/headphone, but aye there is a noticeable difference there imo if not set to high..
I'm quite happy with always high. not quite sure what google use for that though, would imagine 320.
chromecast audio - enable high resolution mode
£20 usually on that auction website, well worth it
also make sure you have decent source material to begin with... 🙂
ps if you've downloaded any music, delete and re-download after setting to always high..

Yep all set to always high.

Is this any better than a normal chromecast with "always high"
Cheers folks

I'd imagine it could be, are you taking an out from your tele to the hifi? could be some issue there? (beyond technical issue with tv audio) do you have something like stable sound selected on the tele? that'll utterly kill any dynamics in the music stone dead.
It's plugged directly into the receiver. Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying it's really bad, but I'm thinking there could be a better way to stream.
I subscribe to Deezer elite, can run it through my hi-fi set up with my Sonos Connect. Cd quality streaming .
Personally I reckon if you are hearing issues on the high settings in app(opinions will vary there btw), then there's some sort of compatibility issue going on. I'd try a chromecast audio into the optical input, you could get a wire and plug your phone directly into the hifi to test out quality there..
Even if the chromecast audio could be in someway configured to play lossless audio, the overall quality may still be held back by the chromecast's DAC, if you are using the analogue output. If you use the digital output via a toslink cable to your receiver instead of an RCA cable, then the dac in the receiver should take over and you should get better quality as a result. An alternative high quality setup which could be controlled from your phone could be a raspberry pi running volumio, playing from a library of lossless audio files, connected up through a quality dac.

Its a normal chromecast (gen1) not a chromecast audio. These are usb and as far as I'm aware dont have a dac.
The chromecast audios do and have the option as you say of toslink or min audio jack.
I think I'll try a chromecast audio and a toslink, its a £30 experiment.
I'll have a google of your other suggestion, I have no idwa what a rasperry pi runnning volumio is but this type of idea is exactly what I eas hoping to get.. a new idea of how to do this better.
I'm thinking the dac in my sclx56 is pretty good so I just want to supply it with high quality digital info from a source my phone can control.
Ideally though the digital info would stream from the net.
Thanks
