I know it's a bit off topic but the nearside handbrake is jamming on my 97 audi. The Handbrake mechanism is all ok it's just the return spring on the caliper body is looking a little tired. Rather than forking out for a new caliper wondering if I can get hold of just a replacement spring. I know many moons ago I replaced the stadnrd ones on my mk2 gti with ones from a ford granada as the VW was notorious for going thru rear calipers. Anyone any ideas???
It is possible, I can't remember if you can buy them as an individual part or not - I'll go check.
You can also get an exchange caliper, around 60 - 70 I think?...
you could try a local VAG independant specialist, i've had success getting odd parts for other cars from bits lying around the workshop
I had the same problem on our Galaxy. In lieu of fitting new calipers I have been giving the spring a good blast of WD40 & actuating it with the 13mm nut on the back.
But just lately it seems to have resolved itself, & I was wondering if there is some kind of self-adjusting mechanism somewhere that has maybe moved & taken out the free movement ?
Biggest problem is usually the slider pins seizing up.
yep had the problem with the slider pins, it seem sto be behaving itself at the moment but a new spring would help sort things out
Go to a scrapyard.
You need to eliminate a sticking handbrake cable as well. If the caliper has pots that turn as they wind back, it might be worth working them backwards and forwards a few times to ensure they are free.
check the handbrake operating cable too. I'm still looking for the link, I have on my PC at home but I'm not there for a few weeks yet...
