Seen it mentioned a few times, but I reckon it deserves a thread.

You maybe haven't seen it, there have been loads of nature programmes on the BBC over the years... bit jaded? Watch it anyway. It's amazing.

Couple of highlights for me -

Penguin climbing out of a cravass using it's beak, with baby attached to it's feet

Lion pulling it's head out of a buffalo hide and shaking the blood off

Loads more incredible footage. Brilliant.

One of the highlights has been that they've toned down the ridiculous sound effects that had been creeping in more and more!

I don't even like Chimps but watching David come back from those injuries was something else

Do we need spoilers for this? Anyway, the Rocky esq recovery montage was brilliant.

It's been a fantastic series and it's even in 4K on iPlayer if you've got the bandwidth.

Saw the one on Painted Wolves last night. Loved it. Beautifully shot, great story-telling, lion pulling head out of Ox and shaking blood off! Kudos to the Ox btw, no idea what it was thinking but hit had balls of steel. Like the bits at the end where they show how they filmed it

Hmm, 4k you say? I'll have to re-watch it again then. Absolutely brilliant series so far.

^this.

What a team effort to get this.

(Still hoping he comes to open our conference next year, or Prince Charles will have to do it. Benefit of him being our patron and founding board member. I am not one for selfies with famous folk, but I will with him...)

I’m waiting for a clash between film crews trying to shoot different groups in the same place, and the ensuing fight to the death/battle for supremacy

I think it's been a bit hit and miss. The chimps show was really good, mostly because of the story of David. The penguins was a bit dull - I think they're a bit too farcical on land to take seriously. Lions are a bit played out but the family dynamic was interesting. The painted wolves was great, mainly for the photography - the overhead drone shots of them running along with long cast shadows were rewound and played back several times, I also like the way there were interactions with other animals - crocs, lions, hyenas and that idiot buffalo.

Brilliant, brilliant show, loving every minute of it. Just a shame it's such a short series.

It's been a stunning series, really enjoyed it. Wasn't expecting so much from last night's, but it was the best of the lot - the story telling was incredible, and beautifully shot. It's hard to appreciate how difficult it must be to film all of that and keep a story thread

to film all of that and keep a story thread

I think the wonder of yesterday's was that there was a real and interesting story to tell, they didn't have to make one up.

Not Attenborough, but if you haven't seen it, this is an awesome (yet very brutal) documentary on the life of a lion family, well worth watching..

To me (IMO, just to clarify) I’m kinda done with the subject matter.

I’m not a fan of watching Gorillas having a shit or eating nuts, or Penguins hopping or huddling in the freezing cold..

Over the years David (and a couple of others) have brought us some fascinating programmes, once we barely knew what Penguins ate for lunch.. now we not only know, but also know that they shit the same as we do.. 🤷‍♂️ Who knew 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

What I do take from the programmes are the incredible diversity of this planet, the interaction between species and an understanding of the specific living environments we all encounter..

And the cinematography, todays programmes have seriously pushed the boundaries of what and how species inhabit this Earth.

For that alone David is a pioneer.

I can't believe they can stand within a few feet of the hunting dogs and trust that they won't attack. I mean, those things are wild! 😀

I remember, years ago, at Marwell being mesmerised by them. Standing by the fence, then suddenly one breaks from the pack and runs straight at us! Quite scary, even though there was a fence there and considering how used to dopey stares from the public those dogs were....

once we barely knew what Penguins ate for lunch.. now we not only know, but also know that they shit the same as we do

I didn't know the males didn't eat for 4 months, yet still had "food" to regurgitate for the babies! I do now 😉

Loving the filming but I hate the naming and trying to humanise the animals

Caught bits of them but all of last nights.

Really enjoyed it as did our Springer. She couldn’t take her eyes off them!

They only do that when they’re highlighting vastly differing behaviours exhibited by individual animals out of a larger population.

If they didn’t the viewer would lack context and might assume that all the behaviours shown were typical of the species

None of the penguins had names because they were all behaving like typical penguins.

I'd assume it's more likely that the sound budget was cut.

Excellent series - and the film crew are totally nails I agree, Doug Allan the U/W cameraman is a flipping legend, getting into freezing water for ages to film a big seal with lots of teeth - no thanks

I do agree that we shouldn't anthropomorphize the animals but for the clarity of the story we need to identify - maybe we should give numbers. [edit] On reflection I didn't feel like they were trying to project human behaviour really, it's a story about an animal that generates a separate family unit and attacks/dominates another unit including potentially killing the pups which I felt was told from an animal POV.

Our cat sat and watched 20 minutes of the Lion one.

She’s not normally one for watching telly ,god knows what she was thinking 🙂

anthropomorphism - just pisses me of - there is no reason for it - I can understand context without this dull tool

Well I suppose they could have called them Painted Wolf 1, Painted Wolf 2, etc.

Oh and hyenas. Proof that intelligent design is a myth.

She has no interest in the TV usually. She was transfixed though.

Sure she was thinking she’d love to be running with them!

edit: quoting nearly worked!

Just watched it back in 4K nearly ducked to avoid getting splattered by blood from the lion shaking its head. Just beautiful in all its glory.

Stunning wasn’t it! I’ve only had 4K for a week or so and been a bit disappointed at the lack of 4K content I could find.

Just sad the 2 lion cubs were killed not long after they finished filming.

I've really enjoyed it. Little J found The "david" episode rather harrowing....and the bloody lion....I thought tarantino had taken over for a second...

Yes,  I'm with Plumber here.  There's a "reality" that Attenborough seems keen to portray and it gets swallowed whole  by a large percentage of the population.   Very little room for alternative interpretation.

The film crew will use the names given to the animals by the wardens and researchers who dedicate their lives learning about these animals. These programs would not be possible without that background knowledge, as is clearly shown in 'the making of' sections.

It's well proven that easily identifiable animals are more easily remembered by names rather than numbers or other code, animals that need reference material to be identified are better identified by codes as it makes searching easier.

It's just a function of the way the human brain works, not a case of the David Attenborough getting the production team to think up cute names for the viewers.

Yep - also penguins aren't given names because they are a colony animal as opposed to a pack like the painted wolves, different behaviours

Tigers last night. Some stunning footage but possibly the weakest episode in terms of the depiction of the story.
An inevitable consequence I suppose of the sheer difficulty of finding and filming the animals, which was addressed in the "On Location" section at the end.

Agreed.
Thought the bit where the tiger was captured was a bit odd. Were they really trying to add to the drama by making it look that the tiger had been killed?
I suppose if you've been on location to film tigers for 2 years, they have an obligation to make a programme out of the 20mins of footage you've managed to gather!

2 years of filming and it appeared they'd never managed to capture that tiger actually making a kill. The near misses were pretty spectacular though!

Yup, also no thermal camera footage of night hunting.

Not second guessing their skills and dedication though, maybe they just weren't allowed in the park at night because thats when the tigers come out and eat you 🙂
