So some scrotes tried to get into the shed last night - crowbar in the door did for the lock but defeated by the padlock higher up. Glad I put that in.

Will beef it all up at the weekend but what can I do in the meantime if/when they come back with other tools?

Have a pile of breeze blocks, odd bits of wood and metal, oh, and a leaky car battery. Cue A-Team montage music.

I'd be thinking Home Alone style - open door battery swings into their face and breeze blocks onto their toes sort of thing - oh and a camera to catch it all and earn £250 on YBF 🙂

Can you leave it emptyish for a couple of weeks? Let them break in, find it's mostly empty plant pots, a spade, some old seeds and a lot of spiders and let them think 'we've looked in there and there's bugger all' then put whatever you keep in there back in there and beef it up?

But remember you've set it all up before going back in the garage to sort the permanent security 😉

I have suggested this before, but I have a blank shotgun cartridge firing doo-dah that is tied to the bikes with fishing line. It has been used in anger once, some years ago.
The neighbourhood still speak of it.

Serious question: Would that be legal?

They are called "Alarm mines". Been around for years and quite a few places sell them which I doubt they would if illegal.

Linky

As long as you use a blank 12g cartridge, not a live one, site it properly away from the area it's triggered and don't modify it in any way I reckon you'd be OK. IANAL etc.

However, 12 gauge black powder blanks are effing loud. Especially indoors in a garage or shed. I reckon if a burglar had the brass neck to sue you for hearing damage, you might be on a sticky wicket!

This saved us from two break ins in Sheffield. We had two in the shed. Yes they can rip em off and stamp on them, but that gives 10seconds of time from a fr*cking loud alarm.

Cameras and pir lighting and an alarm.

One thing crims dont like is being lit up and identified, and while they can hide their faces with masks and hoods, their clothing and shoes and even body language are usually recognizable to the police investigating. The alarm will scare them off for sure and few outwith the criminal will be about that time of the night.

You dont have a tiger you can store in the shed do you ?, that's bound to make a big help, only dont forget yourself its in there.

Thanks for the suggestions. Alarms etc will be looked at at the weekend (had some before but the damp got to them).

Emptying it for a bit makes sense but I guess they'll be back periodically. For tonight though the bikes and tools can come inside.

Tempted to put a sleeping bag in there tonight and lie in wait but can't see that going well.

No tiger sadly.

I agree, don't do it. Some scrotes are violent, one of you gets hurt, the other gets in trouble. Ideally you want to avoid both outcomes.

I tried one of these and the battery didn't last too long, presumably due to the cold.
Worst though was I didn't realise that it beeped when the battery was running low.
I discovered this at about 2am one night after ages of laying awake wondering what the sound was.
Would be nice if you could get one that keeps itself topped up with solar. Not sure if you can.

Anyone use a strobe light as part of a deterrent and got any recommendations?

I'm thinking a proper trippy one that's bright as ****, far end and pointing towards the door

As well as the usual security, I have a cheap motion alarm mounted in my shed. I also have a motorbike brake disc lock with alarm (not expensive on ebay). It is bloody loud when it goes off. I am sure it could be removed with enough brute force, but the disc will be a casualty, meaning they wont be able to ride off with it easily.

Basically, make things as difficult and as loud as possible.

Would a PIR alarm work in a ziplok bag? Off to B&Q now for a bigger lock and alarm(s).

No visitors last night. Made access to the garden harder too so maybe that was enough to put them off.

Liking the shotgun cartridge.

Baby monitor if you have power in there. Leave the other bit by your bed.

That would wake you up with a fright when the Magpies land on the shed roof for a good bicker. 😲

Position it carefully. Nobody puts baby monitor in the corner.

I could put a baby alongside the monitor?

Shed is not within reach of WiFi currently but that's a good shout.

Replaced the lock and fitted an extra. Going to do more tomorrow with some angle iron and address the hinges. If they do get in tonight they'll be disappointed. The kids' bikes are in the bathroom, I'd actually be most gutted if they got nicked.

I've always liked alarm mine idea, but always convinced the wife or child would set them off by mistake. Or maybe me being cack handed.

Also beef up the door frame and the door with some angle iron and get some spreader plates behind the hinges and lock.

The only other thought I had was get some square concrete reinforcing mesh and cut it so it fits into the wall panels.
