Like everybody else I get lots of mails from Nigerian princes, banks that I've never heard of and all other manner of attempts to get my money. The one I got today (below) seems a bit different, as it's a direct attempt at blackmail. My question is, shall I just delete it like the rest, or report it to someone? I'm inclined just to move on, but it does seem quite nasty.
you don't know me and you're thinking why you received this e mail, right?
Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.
What exactly did I do?
I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you've got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It's you doing nasty things!).
What should you do?
Well, I believe, $1200 is a fair price for our little secret. You'll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don't know this, search "how to buy bitcoin" in Google).
BTC Address: 18AVxMK2KHimbrTJVEeUYM3LxLfD9RoR3o
(It is cAsE sensitive, so copy and paste it)
Important:
You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don't get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid (after payment, send an email to misszero@protonmail.com), I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with "Yes!" and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don't waste my time and yours by replying to this email.
Isn't that straight out of Black Mirror...
I'm not sure quite who in the police to report it to, but hasn't there been some official interest in online blackmail stuff recently after a number of young suicides?
That's a new one but I suspect it's just the same fishing email they always send. I think if it was legit then they would have sent you a still photo for proof.
This blackmail does happen but the process is different.
Only one way to find out, when is the 24 hours up?
Does the mail contain any information that leads you to believe it’s not just another kind of spam mail sent to millions of addresses hoping a few get through the filters and maybe 2-3 that do get read by someone scared enough to actually pay?
If it was a directed attack they’d send you a pic mid-fap to prove it.
Yeah - they could easily demonstrate to me that they are for real by sending a picture. As you say, it looks just like a mass mailing, not specifically directed at me. We shall see once the time is up! 🙂
Had the same email. Move to spam and forget.
Don’t pay a penny, tell the police and so what if he sends it to all your contacts, I bet they’ve all had a sly Tommy Tank in the past.
Just fishing.
unless you know better 😉
Start putting a little bit of tape over your forward facing camera
Yep, had one very similar. Ignore it - it's in the same league as the Nigerian 419 scams.
It made the news in Oz a couple of years back, they tended to send the video clip to you so you know they have it, other tricks have included changing your viewing habits to something a lot worse, if the video isn't there then it's fishing
This scam has been around for about a year, with small changes in content. It didn't address you personally (did it?). there's no grab of you even though it'd be an excellent way to make you take this seriously and conversely there's an attempt to deter you from even asking for any proof. It's just a phish. I wouldn't waste any time on it.
Edit - plus the kind of RAT it'd need would be picked up by your anti-malware. Assuming you've some, and it's current.
I got one too, word for word the same, but they only want $300 from me!
100% bollocks.
You heard the man, pay him before he sends your wife video of you jerking off to goat porn.
100% bollocks
was that the site you were on?
Only one course of action really
Cock out in front of the webcam and post it online yourself with a link to your PayPal and mobile phone number
Who knows you might even make money

That's obviously because the OP's tastes are 4 times nastier than yours.
Johnners‘ link, above, had this suggested reply to the scammer, which amused:
”Thank you for saving me the effort of distributing the video !!!

You see, I belong to a group of porno users and we exchange videos all the time, plus we randomly distribute our videos to total strangers in order to recruit them.
So you have saved me some time. Thanks.
Also, the $400 which I need not send to you will pay for my next pedophile encounter. Thank you again.“

Only if people send me money to keep the video to myself 🙂
It's just a phishing email, guy at work got one the other day, not quit the same wording but very very similar ' we've got you masturbating as we hacked your webcam' nonsense, so pay x amount of bitcoin within x amount of time.
Guy doesn't even have a webcam... cue much hilarity and many jovial accusations involving goats!
What's the porn site you went too?
😉

It's OK, you don't have to admit anything just to make the OP feel better about himself. 🙂

I believe the rate is $100 an inch. Dr J must have been bought some of those pills advertised on his favourite website 🙂
I got the same email to my work email address. Word for word (trapped by junk filter obvs)
Work email only ever accessed in the office on a Network desktop with no cameras (and a very strict filter which only allows access to very limited industry relevant content)
100% made up phishing scam.

It's amazing what you can buy these days 🙂
Is nobody else concerned by the fact that OP thought this might be legit? That points to him whacking off to something really nasty 😱
Is watching Pron really that of a big deal nowadays (adult legit type)?
Anyway, just delete the scam mail as it just takes up storage space.
No big deal if you watch porn (legit type) coz they are all over and most people do it ...
If you happen to spank your monkey while watching pron then you are normal like any other human beings ...
😀
Well, 24 hours later and nobody seems to have received these videos!

Haha - good point, though to be honest our dining room, which is where the computer is, is not the place I would generally choose for gentleman's relaxation activities. In fact, regardless of the non-authenticity of the threat, it seemed to me to be a bit of a nastier idea than the usual internet scam.

I think you'll find that Debrett's state that as long as the ladies have retired to the drawing room and the the brandy and cigars are out it's fine to whack away to your heart's content.
Got the same word for word but wanted $1900 from me! Do I win?
Carrie Matheson is the correct person to call here.
Well, 24 hours later and nobody seems to have received these videos!
And, you do know that's just an outright admission that these videos actually exist, aye? 😆
Makes you wonder - if a contact received a video of you having a quick tommy (like thats likely to get through the filters)... do you think they would watch it?
Imagine receiving one? How would they word it so you think, hmm an email from a strange address with a video file attached, yeah, I’ll double click on that. Ooh look its John beating his meat... ooh, he’s lasting well, doesn’t he pull some funny faces...? Gosh, finished. Glad that’s over...

Busted! (so to speak)

Yeah - that's why I was so blase about the risk from these videos (which I now admitted are 100% genuine).
Having said that, I did watch this one right to the end, which is somewhat similar
😂
I did think it awfy brave of him to advertise his hands free chugging device so openly! 😆
Just seen on telly! This isn’t blackmail, this is “sextortion”!
Had the exact same email yesterday !! ... ive already sent the money 🙂
Reading this thread has cheered me up. "Gentlemen's relaxation activities...."
It's been around for a while. See:
https://myonlinesecurity.co.uk/attempted-blackmail-scam-watching-porn/comment-page-5/
Nothing to do with those porn sites you've been visiting.

Watch to the end
“Gentlemen’s relaxation activities….”
But IS it relaxing?
I've just got a new variation on this - pretty much word for word as the OP except that it begins with:
"I am aware, *****, is your password."
where **** is an actual password I used for an online game account about 10 years ago, and it's a string that's unlikely to be used anywhere else. I'm guessing that service must have got hacked at some time in the past. Or my password manager's fubar...
I’m guessing that service must have got hacked at some time in the past
Almost certainly. Lots of big name sites have been hacked and dumps exist of the usernames and passwords (when available). It will just be a phishing email using that data. It's a nice touch though
You can always check here to see if your email address has been found from a hacked site but the answer is almost always yes 🙂
I got that email, I don’t have a laptop/tablet just phone. I assumed it was through this site...
