Just found out that the Ashes series is only on BT Sport, not even a highlights package on another channel! I really don't understand some sports governing bodies (notably the RFU and ECB) selling out to niche channels and then complaining about a lack of grass roots participation in their sport. If you want to inspire kids they need to be able to see their hero's on TV if they are unable to see them in the flesh. Not everyone can afford, or for that matter want to pay for, Sky, Amazon, Disney, BT Sports, Netflix, etc as well as a bloody TV licence which nowadays makes zero sense anyway. I'll put the soap box back the cupboard.

Sadly a lot of the ring fenced stuff has gone that way, but tbh the Ashes is a bit pish anyway, always the same two teams in the final, playing for a wendy house trophy.

It's a bit like the Yanks calling their sport a world series.

Interesting - do you get more participation in a sport by selling TV rights for XX million and investing that in grass roots local clubs and development pathways or selling the TV rights for substantially less but encouraging more people to watch it on TV?

If you want to inspire kids they need to be able to see their hero’s on TV if they are unable to see them in the flesh.

in a world where kids have dozens of other things competing for their time/interest I can't imagine too many are sitting down to watch 5 days of cricket?

When cricket went to sky a few years ago grass roots participation dropped dramatically IIRC

Kids participation in football in Scotland is up massively, and there's next to bugger all on terrestrial TV, it's all on cooncil telly.

There is a highlights program on the bt sports website and app.
It’s v disappointing there’s no terrestrial test cricket. ECB went for the cash rather than attracting more fans. The deal missed some amazing cricket as well. I may be tempted now that my money won’t go to murdoch.

It makes sense to me, 99% of my watching and listening is BBC.

You can buy a month pass for BT with no commitment to continue IIRC. I'm not sure how many kids even watch live tv any more though tbh, and if they want to I imagine they won't struggle to find a dodgy stream.

Watching is lose miserably probably won't get any new fans to the sport either.

Nice try at trolling NBITF. Getting a bit cocky now Scotland have nearly qualified for a football WC aren't you. 😘

Given that it's in Australia with a midnight kickoff here I'd imagine that the live viewing figures might barely make it into 3 figures...

Not terrestrial TV but BBC website says there’s a daily highlights show on iPlayer at 17:00

“In addition to ball-by-ball Test Match Special commentary, the BBC has also secured rights to a daily highlights show.
The highlights show, which will be available on BBC iPlayer, will bring UK viewers all of the latest from the series daily at 17:00 GMT as England try to end the decade-long stretch since their last series win down under.“

Taken from the BBC sports app…it’s something!

Just remember that the rights to show the Ashes in Oz has nothing to do with the ECB. Cricket Australia owns the rights and sold them to BT. They also sold the radio rights to TalkSport (now without Darren Gough). So you really can't blame the ECB for this (lots of other stuff that they can be blamed for). The ECB did make sure that some of the Hundred was on terrestrial, while not a lot better than nothing. In any case how big will the audience for the live rights ?

TMS have the radio rights as far as I'm aware. I will be waking up periodically and sticking an earphone in to find out what's happening.

My grandad used to "watch" it on ceefax (or Teletext).

I think that tells you enough about why people don't want to watch it.
