...according to radio playlist people!

I'll start with two:-
Thin Lizzy - The Boys are Back in Town
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer

Doesn't matter which radio station - always these ruddy two.

Do radio stations get PRS discounts on certain songs!? 🤔

Is this a confession about listening to local radio, the sort of station that advertise 'no-repeat Fridays' as some sort of benefit..??

As much as I love him/them I think Jarvis Cocker/Pulp just have the one song which they've released many times with different words each time.

Being a fellow mad sexual rapist, I'd much rather they played Thin Lizzy's "Killer on the Loose"

@BoardinBob - I think you've missed the OPs point. It's not that these artists don't have a decent number of songs, it's just that it's always the same ones played on radio.

Thin Lizzy’s “Killer on the Loose”

Dancin' in the Moonlight for me.

It's less of a problem on 6 Music OP, but yeah, when I get subjected to Heart or similar in the car, I appreciate what you mean.

Can we have another thread of artists with an entire catalogue that all sounds the blumming same?

e.g. Ed Sheeran, The XX

I hear Solsbury Hill on the radio more than Sledgehammer

Of all of their output, I swear this is the only song of theirs R2 ever play.

RadMac always try to break the convention. But they always like to let us know: "here's a song by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention that isn't Who Knows Where The Time Goes" "Here's Nico but it's not "These days"" oh, hang on, it is always These Days...

I can’t think of specific examples, but there are certain songs that even 6Music will add to the playlist then it’ll keep popping up. As I really only listen in the car, it’s not something I’m aware of now, but at work there are radios scattered around the workshops, and they’re either on Polish or some other Eastern European station, or else ****ing Heart or other Godawful commercial channel, where EVERYTHING sounds the same!

Of course, there are some artists whose entire recorded catalogue all sounds the same - Red Hot Chili Peppers, Status Quo, The XX…

I listen to a lot of Radio 1 (for an old geezer anyway), and I don't think I've ever heard of The XX, and they've been mentioned twice in 19 posts 🤔🤔

Thin Lizzy-Whisky in the jar. I don’t think that Phil Lynott was overly enthusiastic about this track, but rock stations play it, ad infinitum, to the exclusion of far better material…’cold sweat’, ‘the sun goes down’, ‘thunder & lightning’.

Toploader - Dancing in the Moonlight. Saw them years back supporting the Counting Crows at Wembley, and they had a decent set and quite a bit of variety (Achilles Heel was a decent track). Then Daning in the Moonlight came along and got so overplayed it became horrible...

@nbt - this isn't about 1 hit wonders, it's about bands/artists that have a lot of songs yet they often only get airtime for 1 song e.g.  The Pogues - Fairytale of New York

Waiting Room- Fugazi

Fugazi are pretty much never played on the radio. Only on 6 music I've heard, but it's always Waiting Room.

It's one of their best mind.

Whenever they comes on the radio I have to quickly change channel, or I fear I'll drive into the nearest bridge support to be away from it. It's ghastly sugary sweet lovely nonsense, and I hate it on a molecular level.

But, you know, each to their own, your opinion is a good as mine etc 😉

Worse than that, for my Sins I like Radio X, especially Johnny Vaughan, but as great as he is at the chatting bit, he clearly has no interest in music. It's basically the same song at the same time every night (well it seems so anyway) Jamie T Shiela, Libertines Don't look back, one of each of the Gallagher brothers and of course the twice-hourly Radio X contractual playing of Gerry ****ing Cinnamon.

Always griped me that Underworld were only known to the general public for Born Slippy.

But it's nice that it probably made them a mint.

meatloaf like a bat out of hell

Nah, he was equally known for that one about not doing something for love.

I thought the Weezer track was/is Teenage Dirtbag?

Wheatus surely?

Even more cruel when an artist only has one song, and it's someone else's.

Paranoid - black Sabbath
I wanna be your dog - stooges
She sells sanctuary - the cult
Gravel pit - Wu tang clan

First two bands have got so many superior songs and with the cult just play 'rain' or 'wildflower' instead which are both miles better songs

Gravel pit is awful. Just play some deep cuts off any of the solo albums

Dunno about his actual interest in music, but he's clearly using a very commercial playlist he's not allowed to deviate from much.

Bon Jovi gets one - Livin on a prayer
Lenny kravitz has two - go my way and fly away
Aerosmith get three - sex in a lift, creepy about his daughter, walk this way

Queen get quite a few - don't stop me, kinda magic, Bo rap, radio Gaga etc - whilst all arguably great songs, I could quite happily never hear them ever again after being subjected to commercial radio most of my working life.

Telling that by far their best song was composed with Bowie.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of The XX

They haven’t released anything for over 5 years now. They were big in 2009

Romy has her own solo stuff going on, and Jamie XX has as well, but considering they play and sing on each other’s recordings, they’re virtually indistinguishable from any XX recording.
Not that I pay that much attention, I find them bland and uninteresting; if anything by either of them gets played I just tune it out, they only seem to have one song, and 6Music does play it/them a lot.

😂

Opinions like this are what happens when one artist’s back catalogue is reduced to one song, and the chorus is all people listen to. 😢

Someone's beaten new to the obvious with Faith No More and Soundgarden: so many bona fide hits yet Epic and Black Hole Sun are the only ones heard. Could be worse, for a while new listeners would get totally the wrong impression of FNM when Easy was the big hit.

Which gets me to my absolute favourites of this genre, bands who are not only remembered by radio programmers principally for just one song, but one that is atypical of their output. Extreme and More Than Words is the obvious one. My nomination is Jane's Addiction. Incredible Alt Rock act who didn't set the UK charts alight back in their original run, but did score their biggest UK hit during a brief run at being a big mainstream rock act ten years later, so if your classic rock / hits station tells you not to go away because after the break we've got Jane's Addiction lined up for you, you can bet your bottom dollar you're going to hear Just Because.

Those two statements seem to contradict one another.  If they songs would be batter by another band then they wrote really good songs that held up even though they're not great performers (which is the mark of a good song - its good whoever plays it) So illustrating that by saying their best song was written by someone else suggest they weren't good songwriters

The opposite would be someone like Led Zeppelin - they were great performers but their songs only really sound good when they play them (or if covered you have to do so an impression of their performance). For anyone else theres not really a lot of song to play.

Not quite ubiquity, but I reckon if any classic station tells you they're going to play a U2 record, there's a much better than evens chance it'll be Pride (In The Name of Love).

You are logically correct, but my severe (and right-thinking) aversion to Queen and U2 means I sometimes hear their songs and think "oh, that's not bad actually, shame it's by those tossers".

Whereas Under Pressure is amazing, despite involving Queen.
