I've noticed having a bitter taste in my mouth, which persists throughout the day. I'd put this down to not drinking enough water. However I wondered if it might be artificial sweeteners, which I'd consume in Robinson's squash mainly.

So, for the past two days I've drunk nothing other but coffee, beer, water, fizzy water and orange juice. The last two both separately and together, quite nice in a 50/50 mix and is like Orangina. The result is the bitter taste in my mouth has not been present.

I don't find the artificial sweeteners in drinks bitter when first drunk. But sometimes the sweetener taste is obvious which is slightly unpleasant.

Anyone else find the same?

Not directly helpful but I once tried Stevia plant leaves that are the source of similarly named sweeteners. They had a really bitter aftertaste.

Yep - I can still taste it for hours later, and also overnight (from mouthwash the evening before). Currently chewing gum and it's pretty strong now.

Apparently it's because the molecules (?) of the artificial sweetener are larger than that normal sugar so bind to the taste receptors for longer.

(That may have been from Operation Ouch).

Whatever program I watched that told me that also said there's possibly a genetic component as to why some people can taste it more strongly than others - perhaps in the same way that only some people can detect 'asparagus wee'.

Can't say I've noticed it but since eliminating them from my diet for reasons of gut health I've realised how many are hidden in things particularly since the introduction of the sugar tax on drinks. I bought a non diet lemonade and discovered it was in there along with sugar and is in all but the most expensive premium cordials.

I have noticed I don't need to go to the loo in the night since stopping having it but could just be coincidental.

I had a look in the supermarket this evening. Almost all squash (diluting juice for the Scots) has artificial sweetener in. Ended up buying some much more expensive Rock cordial. I expect it got even more expensive recently due to the sugar tax.
