Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has had succesful arthroscopic surgery (key hole) to repair shouler damage caused by multiple dislocations, or if they have always had to go on to open surgery?
Had open surgery on my right shoulder after it was decided key hole was not enough (in the one procedure), but the current doctor says for my left shoulder there is only a slim chance that open surgery will be required.
Obviously this is case by case, and I'll be talking to the doc tomorrow - I'm just interested in other people's experience, if key hole has ever been enough for an active person after multiple dislocations, etc etc.
Ta,
Duane.
Anyone?
Only your surgeon knows.
I had open surgery to screw the fragments of bone back together followed 6 months later by arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to remove the scarring.
Loads of people have successful arthroscopic shoulder surgery. But sometimes the surgeon doesn't know if he can do it until he's inside your joint.
I've had a Bankart repair done via 3 small incisions on my left shoulder. I landed very hard and dislocated it, then put it back in and re dislocated with a front tyre blow out about an hour later. It was bad enough that there was a good chance of it popping out in my sleep!
Anyway, 3 years on from the opp and its completely stable. Maybe a bit stiff, but otherwise tip top. I did have quite a long recovery, and suffered from a frozen shoulder that needed a steroid injection, but otherwise no issues.
Duane probably not what you wanna hear but we have had a young Rugby player who has had multiple dislocations (6) and had them mua'd and arthroscopic procedure like you've said. But this time he had open surgery.
So I'd discuss the options with your orthopaedic consultant.
not me but mrs G had R shoulder done by Len Funk in Wrightington Bolton referred by gp
great job (bankart) and followed physio to the letter no probs since but has finally given up trampolining 😀 and taken up triathlon and mtb much safer?

Good consultants at Wrightington. It is a specialist Orthopaedic Hospital.
As above obviously depends on your shoulder. I had recurrent disclocations, even just reaching down to put my wet kit in the washing machine. Both Hill Sachs and Bankart lesions (damage to ball and "socket" of joint). Mine repaired arthroscopically, without metal work and its been great for me. 6/12 off the mountain bike altogether, and I'm more cautious as I wouldn't like to test it falling the wrong way, but otherwise perfect.
