heading to that age unfortunately, and have a gammy foot that saw a toe fusion a few years back and is now full of creaking sore bits. Aching toes, sore fingers.... getting old !
hurts when riding, then again hurts when not riding !
MTFU or what ? 🙂
My mate is riddled with it, ankle is particluarly bad. He basically just does what he can - downhill is not as much of a problem as pedalling around. Having to walk/push cripples him though. He managed Ard Rock this year, but he would have happily killed me afterwards 🙂
So MTFU I think 🙂
My ankles and knees are a bit shit, due to lots of footy as a lad
Not so bad, I just have to go steady for a mile or two before unleashing my full awesome
However, hurt (gently crushed and twisted) 2 fingers in early summer in a stupidity-related incident and they are still pretty sore and actually impact on my braking (RH index & middle) and keep me awake sometimes <weeps>.
I might end up going all euro with LH front brake if they don't sort themselves out sharpish
My neck is full of it C2 - C8 on the last ex ray which has caused nerve damage to my left shoulder plus both hands and my left ankle ache/hurt and some weeks are painfully swollen . I have maintenance every 10 weeks with a brilliant chiropractor which really helps my neck and shoulder.
Tried green lipped mussel extract for 6 months with no improvement - other people have had good results with it and its worth a try .
I'm at the point that a couple of hrs on the hard tail is most I can manage pain wise .
MTFU to the point where its detrimental to further riding .
Fortunately, my arthritis is limited to a big toe. It hurts a lot when I walk but is fortunately fine when I ride.
My sister OTOH has rheumatoid arthritis and has been on all sorts of meds to try and alleviate it. She can't run or ride a bike any more.
I only started riding a bike after I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the ripe age of 26. For the first year or so I convinced myself I was doomed and would never be able to do anything. Took Methotrexate, then stopped taking it because it gave me a permanent cold. Then I just thought "bollocks to it", bought a bike, started biking to work, got a mountain bike and learned to bimble.
I'm 34 now and I'm slow, I get tired easy and my hands hurt like buggery after a long ride, but so what, at least I can ride a bike, right.
Pain is relative, in that, the more pain you experience, the less things tend to hurt.
As a footnote, I'm now in the process of getting my diagnosis changed, as a recent blood test to investigate a very swollen ankle returned no rheumatoid factor. This and three of my fingernails falling off, as well as the swollen ankle is pointing towards psoriatic arthritis, which means I get to look forward to my skin falling off too.
My advice is to be mindful of injuries, especially around the fingers and ankles, they soon turn into long term problems. If you do hurt yourself, don't be a hero, rest until it heals or it wont ever heal properly.
I have psoriaic arthritis in my wrists and fingers, both from minor sprains that never got better. I had minor psoriasis on scar tissue since my teens but now seemingly it over repairs joint injuries as well as skin 🙁
Initially I couldn't lift a carton of milk or a kettle so I had to quit riding for a while. I was prescribed Methotrexate (20mg) which along with wrist supports has made a big difference. I stopped taking it over he summer and have not had a relapse yet, my rhumatologist said it comes and goes so if it flares up I'll start taking it again.
Lots of sunshine seemed to help me, fish oil also. Basically holidays to the Med!
Good to hear of other sufferers ! I am 50 and it has crept up in last few years......ebike by time I'm 60 I expect...
ebike by time I'm 60 I expect...
Why wait? I'd get a 140/150/160mm travel ebike for comfort and enjoy the next 10 years.
Also got psoriatic arthritis in my early thirties. It got to the stage where I could barely walk without meds and could only dream of swinging my leg over a bike, or one finger braking again. After various failed meds including methotrexate, I finally (about 5 years after first symptoms) got prescribed a biologic treatment called Humira. Was back on the bike within a month and properly smashing it again with about 2 months. Totally changed my life. Just hope I never get back to that state again. My advice is, forget MTFU and get yourself to see a really good rheumatologist. I can recommend an excellent one in the N West... He's also a mountain biker.
get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Ton - I read your updates with interest !
I had a big toe fusion about 7 yrs ago, then a Mortons Neoroma op in same foot 2 yrs later. was fine till a month or so back and now have arthritis in the end joint of big toe which has flared up and darned sore 🙁 . Consultant says fusion of the end joint can be problematic but may be 'least worse option'. Going to give it another 6 weeks or so and go back to see him, thankfully have private cover through work.
I have had 3 hip sugeries. My hips are ****ed.
Another psoriatic arthritis sufferer here. Diagnosed at about 33, 37 now. Luckily I'm on good meds now and symptoms largely under control. Apremilast is anyone is wondering. Beats the hell out of mtx for me.
I tried to keep off Mtx for a long time. Want too keen on the side effects, and also we were having a family and mtx doesn't work with that. I went through a couple of very shit patches when I could barely get up and down the stairs or get the train to work. Kept bumbling about on the bike as much as possible but was very sore and always scared of buggering something good and proper if I came off. Had some surgery on my ankle to fix a tendon and move a bone, so that's a weak spot. Was bloody hard to keep motivated, but getting out did me good.
In a better spell I managed to come off my bike on the fort bill DH track and broke some ribs and punctured a lung. It hurt like hell but about 4 or 5 days afterwards I noticed the arthritis pain was worse than the ribs. At that point I realised I was being stupid and needed to stop pissing about, MTFU and get on stronger meds. Mtx helped a fair bit, but was far from symptom free at max dose. I didn't feel too sick, but it was a pain in the arse and alcohol free beer after a ride isn't the same! Was looking at etanercept when apremilast was approved and my excellent rheumatologist got me on it. Haven't looked back - what a difference.
So...my tuppence worth would be get all the medical help you can. For RA and PA the drugs and treatment regimes are getting better all the time. The cost of biologics is getting lower now they're coming off patent, so hopefully easier to get on to them. For osteoarthritis I'm not so sure, but don't just MTFU without looking at all the options.
Ankylosing spondylitis here. Bad neck and lower back. Still riding a hard tail. BUT now looking at a full suspension bike to help a bit. I find keeping of the drink really helps me. But I like it so I just try to MTFU.
