I'm with Virgin and our wifi went down the other day.

Have managed to get the iMac working wirelessly again but all the phones and iPad will just not work!

They show the network name and have the wifi symbol lit up but just don't work! It's driving me mad!

Had Macs for 14+ years and never had problems like this before.

Has any one had this problem or can offer any advice?

Cheers

MM

I've had similar with Virgin..I was able to (forget this network) on my iPad.
Then rejoin add network password and was good to go!
Hope this helps 🙂

The above should work but I would bet there is another network around on the same wireless channel. Stick a wireless stumbler on your mac and alter the channel to help performance.

I've had similar issues on my wireless due to iffy channels!

I've also had this recently. I had to go into the router setup and change channel which sorted it. Looking at th list of wifi networks locally, it could have been caused by interference from other users (according to a mate).

Could you plug the ethernet cable directly into the Mac and use its Airport to supply wireless to the other devices?

apples wifi protocols are rubbish. My cheap ass pc connects easily to any wifi source, but my 3k macbook drops out all the time/is a bugger to connect in hotspots (such as coffee shops, it's natural home).

I'm probably not doing things the apple way.

Never had a drop out or failed connection on my macbook or imac.
How can you not do it 'the apple way'? Click airport - join network. What other way is there?

Thanks for the replies.

The whole things ****ed agin so surfing on the phone network.

I'm wondering if the Ethernet cable linking the modem and airport is damaged.

Would the airport show up on the apple devices whether there is actual Internet data or not?

Don't know what you've tried or not tried, so try this if you haven't already:

Plug the ethernet cable from your Virgin box into your iMac.

Go into System Preferences > Internet & Wireless > Sharing

In the left-hand box, tick the box 'internet sharing'; in the right-hand section, in the 'share your connection from' drop-down menu, select 'ethernet' - in the 'To computers using' box below, tick 'wi'fi'.

You'll get the option to name the network and set the channel (leave it on 11 for now) and maybe some other stuff like passwords. Just follow the instructions if there are any. You should then be able to see and connect to the iMac network with your phones/iPad.

when a mac doesn't work, that's what they say to you.

and it's a very common problem.

Yes as it's still network.
