For mucky winter walking. Do they tend to size up large? I.e if the jacket say 40" chest that is 40" chest with several layers or would fit 40" without many / any layers and if you want layers size up?

Edit, blood auto correct

They size up big, I'd say.

Bought this (for dog-walking and general outdoor messing around) in a Large (they had new ones for £40 a few months ago) and kinda wish I'd gone for a Medium; I'm 6'1, around 40" chest and 14.5 - 15st. But if you're planning on having several layers and a rucksack on you may appreciate the extra 'volume'..?

Are you talking about the old goretex or the 'new' goretex?

For the old stuff, I go a size up because I like the extra length in the sleeves and body. Yes, it looks like a tent, but it means I get less of me wet when it tips it down.

The 'new' goretext is a lot shorter. I got issued a Large and it's fine for wearing with normal uniform, but rubbish for wearing with a buffalo underneath. I plan on changing it for an XL as soon as I can.

I'm thinking of the French one to be specific because of the pit zips.

I tend not to need many layers as I live down south but want something tough and waterproof. Having just measured my self I'm a tiny 38-39" chest when naked so was thinking try to find a 40 to just have a couple of thin layers.

The newer British dpm lightweight ones are goretex and have deep pit zips

Be aware that each size, ie, sml, med, lrg etc have 2 sizes per size

The brand new British lightweight ones are pants. I never wear mine out on the line and use my old pattern one still,

What do you mean 2 sizes per size ? A small medium and a large medium for example?

You'd be better looking at a dutch gore-tex or even a US army ECWS jacket. Better bang for your buck. The new issue MVP waterproofs are pants, the CS95 style are slightly better but lack decent pockets.
