So after a trip to A&E (no local Minor Injuries unit) for an infected thumb from a vegetation scratch, with a course of antibiotics and "come back if it flares up and we'll ultrasound to see if anything is still in there" , what are peoples recommendations for vegetation resistant gloves (especially the thumb area).

I totally misread that - I really wasn't sure why a vegetarian scratch would give an infection.

Nothing helpful to add - sorry.

As @5thElefant says, the AVS guards are the way to go.

The problem with 'armoured' gloves is that invariably you will lose dexterity. Back when I used to race DH and 4X I knocked up something similar to the AVS guards (using a set of MX guards) to avoid having to use bulky 'DH' gloves.

I tried these (different model) for good lady, as we ride nettly, brambly unused type tracks, she didn’t like but that was more a she’s not a confident cyclist and she was put off by not being able to get her hands on off quickly I thought they looked ok but the ones we have do appear to be a different shape

Possibly these

They’re similar to my old mx ones but a lot lot thinner/lighter(and lacking in metal)

I was recommended these after stabbing myself numerous times...

Edit: just seen other people recommending stuff for riding... the above gloves are certainly not riding gloves, and are used for working with spikey vegetation!

I mis-interpreted what gloves were required, I thought it was for gardening, or trail maintenance, not riding!
I used to wear a pair of Oakley Factory Pilot gloves, with carbon knuckle protectors; proved very effective when riding one of those ‘cycle lanes’ which is just a dotted line alongside a road, put there to slow traffic down, and one car just stopped for no reason. It was actually over the line, with me in the gutter, and my knuckles slammed the door mirror back against the door frame with a bang. My knuckles were unmarked, not sure how well the mirror survived, but I didn’t care.
These are virtually identical, but a fraction of the price:

My Factory Pilots served me well for years, still got them, a couple of the fingertips have worn through, but they’re great riding gloves, and the ones I linked to, for the money, have got to be a bargain.
Mine cost £35 probably 15-20 years ago, £13 or so has to be worth a punt, I’m tempted to buy a pair, and I don’t even ride these days!

I used to able to get fingerless gloves with protection for the knuckles but these days mitts all seem very flimsy.
One pair wears definitely made by Trek, another by Specialized I think. Does anyone know of anything similar available?
